Yes you can follow blogs but they have agendas and there trying to tell you what to listen too there getting paid out to promote certain artist. And im not saying you're wrong you can certainly discover music like that but it kinda plays into what op is talking about where people are being fed what they should think is good. At the same time tho most people don't follow blogs about things there not interested in. There's actually some great conversation to be had about this it's a complex subject.

Ehh, maybe, if the blogs are small they're not exactly getting paid like No Jumper or Lyrical Lemonade. That's pretty human and definitely better than Spotify/YT algorithm. You bring up a lot of good points though.

There are some gems on IG and it's always these small type blogs (NOT No Jumper) because you can tell theyre not doing it for the $$

  • There are still websites out there.

I discover stuff from films and interviews a lot. If you like a person's music dig in and see what their influences are, chances are you gonna like those too.

Idk i mean. I agree the experience is different today in 2021 than it used to be.

But at the end of the day it's on the listener to open their mind and to look out there for what's new. You have all the tools.

It's just easier to blame the generation

it is indeed crazy how much power the spotify and youtube algorithms will have over what gets played and what doesnt

i think thats a more interesting discussion than just hating on the ‘new generation’

Never used any of those sites you've mentioned OP and personally for me Spotify has been great for discovering music. Just one click and I can give an artist a chance. Sometimes I'll just spend the day listening to all the music of an artist that comes into my head or I've heard good things about.

For me it's the best thing about the streaming era, I don't mean to stan for Spotify or anything, just personally it's made me more likely to listen to new music. Pre Spotify I'd just listen to the same s*** I had downloaded on my phone every day

That's 100% true, and that's why I'd push for reading the smaller human blogs (if you really care) and even just keeping an open mind on KTT when people suggest artists on here.

The algorithms by Spotify are the worst because theyre the same people who pay out royalties to artists. There's such a huge conflict of interest there.

It works for casuals though. And thats what 99% of the userbase is so.

Thats a good point too. Spotify is in a good position to very easily show users new artists and do it in a user friendly way. So the user experience is, pretty nice. The problem is the conflict of interest I mentioned in last post

I do exactly that all the time???
That’s why the thread makes no sense 😭

“Casual listeners” have always not gone out of their way to search for music by smaller/unknown/new artists, this isn’t a new thing, however it’s easier to find new music than ever before

It's theoretically easier, but then again it's not, because 99% of that experience is controlled by the big players (Youtube, Spotify, Apple Music) who all have a conflict of interest in the matter.

You could support new artists like you say or follow the small blogs mentioned, but it doesnt happen in 99% of cases, because its the user experience isnt as fluid

  • Mar 30, 2021

Op you might have gone out your way but most people didn’t

I think thanks to modern tech more people are aware of more niche genres and scenes which otherwise wouldn’t get much traction

    WESLEY PRESELY

You can’t group every new person in this generation into a box.

A niche love for music will never completely die. Their will always be people that love and discover music the same way people do movies for example.

The casuals probably won’t, but they never did to begin with. That’s why they’re called casuals.

People who really care about supporting independent music need to make an effort. That's more than clicking on your daily Spotify recommended

to say people dont discover music from streaming services just because its curated isn't a good argument

especially when comparing it to the old sites like you have in OP, because there was also people 'curating' them and pushing certain tapes

Right, but the difference today is the conflict of interest. Spotify is in control of who gets on major playlists but also pays those artists for streaming rev. So by definition, Spotify's curation is suspect

Based on their current revenue model, Spotify doesnt give a f*** about actual independent artists, or recommending users new cool rising artists for their cool new art.

    It's all $$$$$$$$$

  • I have never heard music in my life,I'm just a paid shill by Atlantic Records to drive sales and streams to our artists.
