Is it better to start boxing for at least a year to develop my hands then move on to muay thai?

I also want to add some bjj as well eventually

It can help but you're better off learning basic punch/kick technique then just boxing then swapping since the styles are so different you'll develop bad habits. Boxing head movement gets you absolutely clapped in muay thai and the angles and even punches are different. You're better off learning thai boxing first and taking some things from boxing when you can.

This sounds cool but this don't mean anything against trained fighters, I see lots of guys walk in with street fight experience claiming they haven't lost and get ragged by 19 year old Mexicans at the gym.
Boxing sparring is notorious for guys being a******s and trying to take each others heads off, if you're worried about it and have the mentality to feel the need to get em back it's not gonna work, you gotta drop your ego completely and the idea of "I just want to get in shape" is gonna lead to weakness. I'm not trying to be an a****** but I'm trying to give you the truth here. This probably isn't a good option for you unless you find a really good gym or just do bagwork. If you wanna get in shape, there are other ways. If you're worried about damage, you can always do some type of grappling. S*** happens and you can't control other people in the gym and boxing gyms have a lot of hot heads who want to take heads off. If you need striking classes many thai is probably better with their emphasis on light spars but they can get wild too.

Oh bro Im fairly certain 15 year old Mexican kids who been boxing since they were 5 will beat the f*** out of me. Boxing is high speed chess it isn't anything like street fighting. I don't think I'm the greatest fighter but I'm fairly certain anyone in my weight class I'm gonna get a couple licks in and yeah s*** happens. I could see someone accidentally knocking me out if I walk into some stupid s*** and that's fine I would accept it but if you come at me with malicious intent I'm gonna reciprocate that energy.

And sure there might be better ways to work out but I don't happen to like much but I do like boxinh. So why not pick up skills whilst getting in shape and doing something I like.

I actually know how to fight too. I only lost two fights ever and they were boxing matches against this kid who now is semi-pro I put hands on him too I bet he remembers me and I lost to some huge ass meat head when I was like 15 but I put hands on him he said I was a hard fight. And I have never lost a street fight ever and I use to fight a f***ing lot i was tag banging in the 90s in los angeles s*** was very real and active out here it was a daily thing. I also got jumped twice and I beat up at least two kids each time. One of the time I got jumped it was cause I destroyed some kid trying to tax me in the hood and I was like 12 years old he had to be like 16-17. The older kids from his hood came out and f***ed me up. The other time I got f***ed up by three grown ass men when I was like 12 too they were from a tagging crew in the area thats now a gang. I now avoid fighting completely it's too dangerous everyone shoots now too scared to get beat up if not I would still be banging on mofuckers to this day. But I like boxing and think It would be good exercise.

firstly, it’s likely you won’t spar for months / until your coach allows you. meaning you’d have to get in shape, get the basics down, and show enough commitment to do so.

secondly, you literally can make the decision to spar or not…and when you do spar, you’ll be with individuals of a similar skill level.

third, when you are sparring you’re doing so w your peers/ teammates why would you have malicious intent for one another? yes things can get dicey, but that is the nature of the fighting.

fourth, it’s likely as you begin that you’re the most dangerous piece of a given sparring match. you’re new, you don’t know what you’re doing, you likely lack bodily control, and as you’ve proved thru your posts you’re a hot head. if you go in thinking you’re tough s***, or the fact that you’ve won a few fights in the past means anything, you will be humbled. also, just don’t be that guy

fifth, in the case that someone is going too fast, or you want to slow down, communicate that.

do some research on the gyms in your area. visit them, take a few classes, observe the coaches and the people. do those people align with who you are/ want to be/ values? how far is it from home? how much does it cost? do they offer the things you’re looking for? what’s the schedule like?

also, the gyms you mention certainly do exist. it’s up to you to suss em out. sometimes taking ur partners head off is the culture. compare the dutch and thai forms of sparring. whatever the case, a new guy will never start there

this is a quote from ur previous comment: I plan to work hard and listen to the coaches and put in work with other guys but that is my boundary

go in w that intent and you’ll be str8. also, when you begin, do what you can to leave your ego @ the door. i have to constantly remind myself that when i go to class.

Shout out to you for addressing my concerns this is a well thought out post and I appreciate you. However I disagree with you on me being a hot head sure I'm capable of f***ing s*** up and I have in the past but only when needed too, I'm not looking to instigate or get into fights (in the street) and honestly I think that plays a role in why I have won most my fights call it divine intervention or something because I feel like I was always in the right some what I've beat up kids trying to rob or tax me, multiple people trying to bully me, because I definitely don't look intimidating, I beat up a kid on once for trying to pick on a special Ed kid,a few people for trying to hoe me out I beat up two kids once for trying jump me I ddtd one of them into a school lunch table and split his head open the other kid caught the hands but I stg mofuckers be trying me sometime... Most of this happened when I was younger I don't live in the hood anymore and don't walk in gang infested territory like I use to. I actually haven't been in a fight in a long time and I'd probably avoid it completely now cause everyone carries guns and uses them. I'm p chill bro I just don't like being f***ed with cause I keep it cool with most so when someone does try to f*** with me I'm like wtf I would never do that to you what makes you think its cool to do that your gonna learn today why you should be respectful to others. Someone beats me up and gets the best of me. Good! You don't learn anything by practicing against people who aren't better than you but keep it professional with me if try to violate me, I can turn from a friendly guy to a gangster real quick. But at this point I avoid all confrontation when I was younger I had a chip on my shoulder if someone disrespected me I felt like I had to prove to them why I'm the s***. But now I know I'm the s*** and I don't feel the need to prove anything to anyone. I'll tell you what tho my banter is a1 I talk a lot of s*** some people get it and they can keep up and interactions with them are hilarious as f***. I don't think that makes me a hot head tho.

  • Mar 29, 2022

You make it sound real cool too like a club aspect to if and ofc they would carry themselves differently and I would vibe with some more than others thats only natural can't believe I didn't think of that. There like gangs themselves theres probably crews that will beat your ass for violating the new guy. My life is kind of a blur at the moment I just work work work. But hopefully one day I can join a boxing club I think it would be fun as f***.

That’s what I’m talking about tho, this idea of “if they come at me i gotta come at them with the same energy” type s*** is never good in sparring, i had it for a while too and it got my ass kicked or got me in hard spars. I wasn’t at a point like you where you said you’d go at then with a bat and s*** tho it was just an internal ego. If you have that you’re almost guaranteed to get in a war at some point since it’s gonna escalate. You gotta straight up ask people to go lighter and in the moment it’s harder to do than people think and even then a lot of guys don’t listen, if you take that personal and want to go at them, even outside the gym type s*** they not gonna like that and secretly green light you.
You can always join and just hit a bag, make friends and spar occasionally until you find a few people you like going with but look for a gym with a good culture

Just train on your own when the gym empty or try different martial arts or different styles of the same thing.
If that don’t work think about competing and it’ll have you in the gym way more
Burnout is real tho, take some time off and you’ll find the desire to do it again eventually

My gym has this thing for the Thai program that you need to pass to take a fight where they grade you on everything. It’s 10 rounds on the bag, 10 holding pads, 10 hitting pads, 10 partner drills then 10 rounds of sparring.
I went home and legit collapsed lmao. My entire body almost cramped the last few rounds and i definitely f***ed up a bunch of s*** on me.

Update: everywhere is like 50 dollars (AUD) a week. Wtf.

There is a university 40 minutes away that's MUCH cheaper though..

How long do you guys travel? I'm used to 15 minutes for BJJ

Do it, it’s fun but just know it’s a genuine grind and sacrifice even at the amateur level.
