im thinking about doing two things at once. one boxing and one some more advanced s*** like defending a kick, breaking out of a clinch and basic grappling. what martial arts would be best for that?

Do boxing and wrestling or jiu jitsu.
Kickboxing and Muay thai are good for the clinch defending kicks and elbows/knees but the style it develops actually kind of hurts some guys when they transition to grappling. They’re extremely upright and rely on the shell more than boxers do who use more movement and range management. In a real fight you’d rather be way out of range than in the shell upright like kickboxers do. Do enough jiu jitsu to shoot take downs, stop take downs and control the top. The submission stuff is cool but working on just control and escapes is more than enough for fights.

Or you could just join an mma gym lol

I wanted to get into boxing solely for exercise I'm too old to take it seriously. But then covid popped off

I wouldn't mind training and sparring with people on my level but I swear if some f***er tries to flex on me and knock me out knowing that's not what I'm there for I'm gonna beat his ass with a bat or I'm gonna shoot him. I don't play that s*** I'm here to spar and exercise donut try to stunt on me.

Is it better to start boxing for at least a year to develop my hands then move on to muay thai?

I also want to add some bjj as well eventually

I honestly would. I be doing that s*** at work when f***ers be trying to act funny they get one pass after that I'm liable to make an example of em. I would tell the people im sparring with too. If you try to violate me bad s***s gonna happen to you not me. I honestly don't mind losing fights or getting knocked out say in a street fight you win some lose some. but that s*** is a sport theres a an aspect of professionalism if you try to violate me I'm not gonna feel bad about f***ing your life up. I'm doing it with a big f***ing smile on my face.

lol it's okay to be concerned about who you're gonna be matched up with and if you two will respect each others skill level, the coaches are fine hearing that. But nobody likes that hostile energy, especially if you're just about to spar with someone, it sounds mad insecure and on edge.

Anyone who's been in a boxing gym long enough to be a regular won't be trying to tear you down, i dont think you have to worry about that. Just be careful of other new guys who are looking to prove something, often they're just ignorant in how they're handling themselves

Start off with boxfit classes if there any near you. It's decent to build your form and technique to get in the routine of it all. I started just before Christmas and I'm wanting to pick up some gear to start joining sparring classes some point soon

    This is good advice.

Just do it and stop overthinking. You'll know which style you like by just doing it.

I just would like to exercise because I need to because I'm in terrible shape and I happen to like boxing. I have no aspirations of being a great I'm just a normal guy who would like a work out doing something he enjoys.

The second part sounds very accurate I imagine veterans like to ease people in and foster a culture of growth it would be weird if there constantly scaring guys out of a gym and I could definitely see why someone whose a big newer would feel like he has something to prove.

And tbh Im the s*** I bet they'd love me at most gyms and they wouldn't even have a problem with me being mad reckless and liable to f*** someone's life up if needed. It's not like I'm looking for problems I'm just very blunt and straight forward and there to work out dasit I'm not aspiring to go pro I'm sure theres a bunch of guys that are willing to take sparring sessions to that level so for me to ask to be respected about not willing to take it there when there's a bunch of guys there who are probably willing to do it is not some kind of nutty take. I plan to work hard and listen to the coaches and put in work with other guys but that is my boundary don't f*** with me I'm not there for that and I don't think that's a nutty take and It shouldn't be perceived as something hostile im a guest a tourist I'm there to learn by people to qualified to teach I'm not there to be violated.

I actually know how to fight too. I only lost two fights ever and they were boxing matches against this kid who now is semi-pro I put hands on him too I bet he remembers me and I lost to some huge ass meat head when I was like 15 but I put hands on him he said I was a hard fight. And I have never lost a street fight ever and I use to fight a f***ing lot i was tag banging in the 90s in los angeles s*** was very real and active out here it was a daily thing. I also got jumped twice and I beat up at least two kids each time. One of the time I got jumped it was cause I destroyed some kid trying to tax me in the hood and I was like 12 years old he had to be like 16-17. The older kids from his hood came out and f***ed me up. The other time I got f***ed up by three grown ass men when I was like 12 too they were from a tagging crew in the area thats now a gang. I now avoid fighting completely it's too dangerous everyone shoots now too scared to get beat up if not I would still be banging on mofuckers to this day. But I like boxing and think It would be good exercise.

This sounds cool but this don't mean anything against trained fighters, I see lots of guys walk in with street fight experience claiming they haven't lost and get ragged by 19 year old Mexicans at the gym.
Boxing sparring is notorious for guys being a******s and trying to take each others heads off, if you're worried about it and have the mentality to feel the need to get em back it's not gonna work, you gotta drop your ego completely and the idea of "I just want to get in shape" is gonna lead to weakness. I'm not trying to be an a****** but I'm trying to give you the truth here. This probably isn't a good option for you unless you find a really good gym or just do bagwork. If you wanna get in shape, there are other ways. If you're worried about damage, you can always do some type of grappling. S*** happens and you can't control other people in the gym and boxing gyms have a lot of hot heads who want to take heads off. If you need striking classes many thai is probably better with their emphasis on light spars but they can get wild too.
