been consistent with kickboxing lately, bought myself some new gloves as a reward (also both of my old ones decided to fall apart from the stitching)
how'd it go?
Lost a split decision, i didn’t agree with it but it is what it is. I basically didn’t get hit the whole fight but they gave him points for pressure. He got 2 29-28 scores and i got a 30-27 for me so it was close. I definitely won the 3rd but the other 2 were both close. I landed the bigger shots but he was consistently throwing more. His team also cheated and spilled water in between rounds and gave him a 4 minute break. Keith almost took a point off for it but i told him not to lmao. I kinda regret it now
I wanna get into this but there are no local clubs in my area that are affordable 😕

Damm man but at least you went in there and stayed competitive. Judges always f***ing s*** up
started doing capoeira - purely for flexibility and fitness. i'm aware there are more efficient martial arts for fighting purposes.
really fun, i would recommend, insanely good workout
Is there a difference between gyms that teach a martial art for sport, defense, and being a simple hobby? What questions should I ask when researching gyms?
I want to learn some things for defense, so I know I have to get in the ring and spar to actually learn. However, I don't want to compete with the champion 16 year old from an anime arc every time lol

I personally think that people/places that market martial arts as self defence are doing it as a money grab and they are usually courses that inspire false confidence especially when it comes to defending against people with weapons.
If you just train for sport and get to a point where you can hold your own in sparring, you'll be fine against most people who are looking for trouble

Cool cool, so got to put in work to be an average rookie. Just need to find the time then with all the other hobbies I got and my 9-5

Basically just make sure they have reputable coaches and if there seems to be people who do well in active competition, even if only at a regional level
Don't worry too much about freaks in sparring when you're first starting, generally people can get a good read on experience and reel back any real damage, and literally just tell them "hey I'm new to this" before the round
Doing my first bjj comp in december. Hopefully there’s enough fat mfs in my weight class

Most good gyms have a mix of everything. Pro fighters alone can’t sustain most gyms so they have beginner and hobbyist classes to keep it afloat and separate the pros/advanced guys.
Make sure the gym has active competitors and coaches who either have film or currently spar students or at the very least have a reputable name across where you’re at. There’s some BS gyms out there. If it’s an mma type gym then they should have specialist coaches so a wrestling coach, Jiu jitsu coach, boxing coach, Muay Thai coach ect. If it’s 1 guy running everything it’s not a good sign.
If you want to get better you’re going to have to spar everyone at every level just ask the better guys to not go too hard and make sure you don’t hit them too hard

i am looking to get into muay thai. i go to the gym and train strength and am slim and muscular so i dont see physicality being an issue. id like to do a form of exercise which isn’t just pure vanity
plus i’m quite pretty and i live in a city with socioeconomic problems so want to learn a mode of self defense.
