Anybody wanting to get better at BJJ faster go with your school to tournaments. Even if you aren’t participating.
Def try an get to a gym that offers throw in classes of other arts.
For spectating threads including MMA and Boxing see the stickies in the Sports sxn
For those interested in trying out Martial Arts, the most popular ones that are available are:
Boxing (striking)
Kick Boxing (striking)
Muay Thai (striking)
Judo (grappling)
Amateur Wrestling (grappling)
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (grappling)
MMA (mixed, obviously, but the gyms will usually have different classes focusing on different aspects too)
Tae Kwan Do, various schools of Karate and Krav Maga are also widely available but be warned of McDojo's for these styles.
McDojo is a pejorative term (in the same vein as “McMansion” and "McChurch") referring to martial arts academies (generally located in the Western world) which, rather than being honestly committed to teaching students, are instead concerned primarily with amassing a profit. You will often see coaches making ridiculous claims about self-defence or deadly skills. Large amounts of kids with black belts is also a warning sign
Don't be scared of your fitness levels or experience when thinking about joining Classes are filled with all sorts of different people from the guy who goes once or twice a week, to the killers that go twice a day, everyday.
Sports and even specific gyms also all carry their own culture! Be sure to shop around and catch the vibe you're looking for. Maybe you don't care for self-defence and think weapons are cool, look into Arnis or Kendo If you think spamming buttons as Eddie Gordo on Tekken is fun, give Capoeira a go!
thank you for this
once lockdown is over, can't wait to get into muay thai.
Honestly believe its the best for self defense. The clinch and elbows are incredibly underrated. Add that with leg kicks and good hands and you'll be a beast.

Muay Thai in MMA gloves is also imo the best pure striking sport to watch

Yea Muay Thai is badass, I’m still getting the techniques down but its fun af and powerful. Fun to watch as well.
Whats the best and easiest 1 to get into for self defense purposes?
Tbh any of them are good since most people don't know s***, just make sure you're sparring to get familiar and comfortable.
Imo use it as a last resort and try deescelate first.

Self defense you'd be better off just boxing and Jiu hits. Plenty of gyms everywhere with capable teachers.
Muay thai is getting big with more gyms but try to find a traditional Thai style gym if you do it. The clinch work and trips and sweeps are really good tools. It's harder to find a legit good school in some areas though.
Pure self defense you'd be better off learning wrestling but after high school nobody just teaches wrestling so BJJ is the next best option.

Nah its boxing tbh
Nah its boxing tbh
I feel like Muay Thai is more realistic for a fight. When people get in a fight they’re gonna use every weapon they have available. Knees, elbows, kicks, clinch.
wrestling/bjj is prob the best base
This is facts tho, being a good striker is dope but the majority of street fights end up going to the ground. If you have no ground game you’re gonna get destroyed.

even in an actual mma fight/career, chances are a talented wrestler will go further than a talented striker. i wish i picked up wrestling younger when i had the chance tbh, the uniforms they wore always turned me off from training it lmao

If that fight goes to ground you’re probably f***ed because you’re getting jumped
Most of these street fights aren’t going to be 1v1 so you want to be able to stick and move hence striking being the most important
my traps have been swollen / misaligned for 2 weeks
any of y'all go to the chiropractor?
muay thai gang
How do you weed out mcdojos from legit/good gyms?
First off google the gym. If there is very little information on it it's probably a bad sign. Also google the instructors. You should be able to find out some info on them like fight records or belt records. The win loss records don't really matter but all of the claims they make on the instructor page should be verifiable. This last one isn't a hard rule but I never join a gym if it doesn't offer a free trial class. To me that means that gym owner isn't confident enough in his ability to retain a student based on his teaching and that's a red flag for me

chiropractor as in the guys that crack different parts of your body? I believe most of it is BS, better off seeing a physiotherapist and working out a long term solution
Not sure if the definition or qualification are diff where u live though
