I don’t get how any of the 3 don’t have a story.

Good time is two brothers get caught up for a bank robbery and Connie spending the night trying to get money to bail out his brother

Uncut gems is Howie owing money to his brother in law and now given a week, and he runs round the city tryna sell his gem and place bets to get money to pay back.

Marty is him running around trying to get money to go to his tournament.

Lmao all three movies are the exact same scenario, a man who’s an a****** and desperate for money and everything goes bad.

Theres a clear goal that the protagonist is working towards: get money and bail out bro / get money and pay him back / get money and go win tournament. And they never lose sight of that goal so nothing is random.

Yeah life moments get mixed in like Howie and his family stuff. Or Marty and his girl being pregnant, but that’s what makes the story and world rich, it doesn’t have to just be plot plot plot plot plot the whole time.

And even regarding the dog a situation happened where the guy paid him MONEY to take his dog to the vet, he decided not to cus him and Tyler wanted to go hustle to make more MONEY, the dog got lost and now Marty comes up with a scheme to get reward MONEY for finding the dog, that he lost lmao. The entire dog subplot still revolves around Marty’s desperation for money so it’s still very much connected to his goal.

the entire movie is basically supposed to be Marty's retelling of what happened in this part of his life to either his child or grandchild in the 80s, hence the 80s music

Also to those complaining about the “no story”… the premise for this movie was about a guy trying to become a ping pong champion, what kind of story were they expecting?

A little too long but got my seal approval. Even with the killer soundtrack and the usual Safdie formula.

Honestly I didn’t even know this was an actual critique on the movie? Cus when I left the theater I definitely felt as tho I watched a story that moved forward

I think the crowd who believes there’s no story here were expecting like multiple tournaments and an actual mainly focused on ping pong being played movie. I think the side plots and spending a some time getting money didn’t seem like plot to them because it’s not what they thought the movie would be. Plot to me carries a movie forward and this didn’t stop moving forward. They want like a Paddington type of movie.

They’ve done studies and found average RT scores have only gone up since it started

That’s due to the fact there was a more selective pool of legit critics back in the day and now there’s been almost 150+ new bullshit critics on YouTube or some small ass publication that d***rides everything that have been added to inflate the scores up. Studios love to invite these hacks to their premieres because they know it’ll make a big difference to their RT score and they can then market their score in their trailers
