i think reviews killed a lot of general audience hype for this
eh i liked the trailer bc for the first time in Marvel history i wasnt fully sure what the movie was about
tickets were going like crazy when they dropped too my theater was basically sold out on the first day for the first time this year
I saw this because of Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, celestials, cinematographer and Marvel branding.
but the trailer wasn’t selling me and a lot of people i have talked to were not sold on the trailer tbh.

i dont see how the trailer didnt sell you
were you not interested in potentially finally seeing something different from the MCU?
im just so sick of seeing every single thing a movie has to offer in the trailer and eternals didnt feel like that so it felt refreshing to me

It felt like how the first act in the movie felt for me.
It felt hollow and pretentious.
like look at us we’re trying to be different.
and i felt nothing but boredom watching the trailers
Thank god the movie isn’t that the whole way through

Ngl Marvel needs to go out of its way to be different at this point.
It might actually be the best step they can take moving forward, hope Moon Knight leaves such an impression too.

Oh yeah don’t get me wrong. They needed to do something different for sure. But yeah idk just felt off for me on a personal preference when watching the trailers
at the current rate it will be one of the lowest marvel box offices tho and no movie has been this low since 2015
you could argue pandemic but Venom did more than the first movie opening weekend showing that people will show up and sequels historically do less at the box office period
in my mind theres no excuse for one of the most hyped and marketed marvel movies since Endgame to be one of the lowest marvel box office openings ever
not to mention every single person who saw venom saw the eternals trailer
One other thing to consider is the runtime
Venom clocked in at 90 minutes allowing more showtimes to be sold
This is 2:37 so that’s at least 3 and a half hour blocks for this movie vs 2 and a half

”in my mind theres no excuse for one of the most hyped and marketed marvel movies since Endgame to be one of the lowest marvel box office openings ever”
I feel this. It might just be as simple as the footage in marketing didn’t connect with the GP tbh or even the reviews
I thought the discussion was about Venom doing more than Eternals in general btw. If people are saying Eternals numbers is because it’s being eclipsed by Venom idk about that
As for the reviews affecting box office; on one hand, we as film nerds definitely underestimate how much the GP goes by reviews (understandably so, they don’t wanna waste their money and don’t have the “I’m above reviews” pride that cinephiles have)
On the other hand, if a movie grabs the interest of the GP strongly enough then that will trump reviews (as was the case for Suicide Squad in 2016 or Venom in 2018). If Eternals hype was negatively affected by reviews (which it kinda looks that way), then it would simply be a case if the film not grabbing the interest of the GP enough to trump the effects of bad reviews

Or it's hard to sell the GP on characters they don't know about after putting all the ones they are familiar with in a last shabang movie
Also maybe the movie just isn't good
Wasn’t aware that this movie was considered hyped and aggressively marketed
Felt like this was the most lowkey marvel release we’ve had yet
Waiting for the movie to start now. True IMAX gang

Been reading marvel my whole live and never even heard of the Guardians yet they blew up

See my last point
Trailers were decent to say the most
I'm a Marvel fan and they didn't make me want to go run and see
Wild that we’re at a point where 3 different Marvel films are in theaters at the same time
Could be 4 by next month

Jesus Christ
what a quote lmao
Snagged a 10 o’clock show in imax
Already pretty drunk so if I go up at a steady pace (Uber strictly, safety first) then I should enjoy this movie no matter what
