What you're talking about is exactly why number scores are counterproductive to reviewing a body of work. All you get are people who skip to the score and move on. You CANNOT reduce art down to a numbered scale imo, especially an art form as diverse and broad as music. Using a numbered score shows a lack of appreciation for the diversity of art and also always inevitably leads to stan wars

this this this 100% this. “scoring” art in general is a f***ing plague on popular understanding of art that needs to die in order for us to evolve

*from what he THINKS it’s trying to succeed
you mean. but yeah, i agree. number scores are dumb as f*** in the first place though, and people that don’t realize that and continually bring up the 6/10 for MBDTF are dumb as hell or just trolling lol

How would it be what he thinks it’s trying to succeed? What is this Sexyy Red album trying to achieve if not fun turn up anthems for a strip club setting?

Not even just in music, but in any form of art it’s pretty easy and clear to decipher what an artist’s intentions are.

You wouldn’t walk into a John Wick movie expecting Schindler’s List

The numbered score system can make sense, but unfortunately a lot of people don’t know how to interpret them and/or just look at the score without actually reading the review

Kevin Gates doesn't have a personality? Kevin Gates has more hits than a lot of your favorite rappers. He was never lauded by the poptimists and he rapped his ass off as well.

I don't think people want reminded of street violence at all. They'll say it encourages it, but if you replace it with p**** it's all good. Then they'll say the p**** rap doesn't encourage risky behavior or effect children. Which is it? I'm consistent on this issue. Not many are.

Being just a nasty f*** that also has issues with the law =/= personality that audiences can fall in love with

It has its’ place in society, but I think in music it’s a very outdated practice that doesn’t serve any functional purpose outside of a deeper music discourse.

For instance, I think video game reviews are still wholly important because video games are $70 a pop, so a well thought out review from a person or publication that a consumer trusts can inform them on whether they should spend their money on said game or not.

It used to serve a purpose in music when albums were $10 a pop and you had to buy each individually, but in the streaming era they really don’t serve a purpose other than helping the listener know whether they should spend their time with an album or not

I think a better alternative is a "like scale"
    -Disliked it a lot
    -Disliked it
    -Found it ok
    -Liked it
    -Liked it a lot

A lot less toxic and more room for people to want to read into their take and interpretation

try to understand me here. i never said you couldn’t infer intentions, but for all you know John Wick is an allegory for some other s*** known only to the creator. ever seen a David Lynch film? the man intentionally doesn’t explain anything behind his work because he specifically wants to be open to interpretation by anyone, and then that way people come away from things like Twin Peaks, Mulholland Drive and Lost Highway with their own unique experiences. obviously im not gonna disagree with you that the sexy redd album is MOST LIKELY just trying to be some strip club bops, but for all we know that’s not how she intended it, and she’s actually a satirical depiction of a thot rapper and/or some kind of social experiment lmfao. That’s not what I actually think, but for all I know it’s possible. the only one who can objectively say what the intention of a piece of art is is the artist himself, that’s kind of inarguable. There is such thing as death of the author, But that’s when a work comes to popularly Be understood in a way that the author did not intend, like Alan Moore with Watchmen. At the end of the day “the word of God” is still Alan Moore. But guess what? You can still like your interpretation better and that’s perfectly valid also

I’m not saying there can’t be ambiguity in art with a creator’s intentions, but for the most part it’s clear what an artist or auteur is trying to create. If you know anything about Sexyy Red, it’s pretty obvious that’s who she is naturally and her music is an extension of her.

Sure you can always say “but we don’t know this isn’t this” but at a certain point that just feels like questioning for the sake of questioning

yes, I would never question sexxy reed’s Intentions because I’ve been given no reason to. That was just an experiment for the sake of making a point. But not knowing the intentions behind the art of David Lynch for example is partly the whole point. That’s all I’m trying to explain to you, that at the end of day this is art And even though it’s up to the Artist to primarily decide what the art is for that doesn’t mean you can’t have your own own interpretation and that It can’t mean something specific to you

For example, Maybe you don’t like the high concept behind a bunch of Kendrick Lamar projects and you just wanna enjoy them as sets of banger songs. That would be you disregarding the “word of God” of Kendrick and just enjoying the music the way you enjoy it

but the score is accompanied by several words and sentences to explain how the reviewer got there. it's not the publications fault that people just wanna see the score and immediately lose their heads if it's not something they agree with lol

personally tho i can't use number scores it just doesn't compute for me. but i get why it's done that way
