Got ragebait YouTubers posting Samus’ face on their MP4 hate videos
I’m still not done with the game, and I’m enjoying it still. I will admit it lacks that spark from previous Prime games unfortunately.
They may have pandered to casuals too much with how straightforward it is. The linear level design, the vast empty overworld, the tacked-on motorcycle and the NPCs lowkey give it that "licensed game" feeling like as if it were based on some Hollywood movie.. (On a positive note, the NPCs aren’t as insufferable as the critics made it out to be.)
The whole psychic gimmick/set of mechanics does nothing to me; Phazon in the older games was more interesting even though it seemed underutilized.
All in all, as sad as it is to say this, I hope this is the end of the Prime subseries and 3D Metroid heads in a brand-new direction.
this games really weird for me cos im kinda having fun with it but i feel its a bit safe in some areas namely the ones youve mentioned. it could be the fan in me wanting this to succeed cos of how long its been in the oven but idk
i dont think thatll be it for prime games but i would be open to new approaches for the series as a whole. lowkey an other m type of game (obviously with A LOT of tweaks) gameplay wise could be cool
After finishing the game i can definitively say this was a weird experience, with both the highest peaks and lowest lows of the main series, and a whole lot of questionable decisions that i can only attribute to the rather peculiar development history. Nothing here seems impossible to fix though, so i have a lot of faith in the future of the series, and i don't think we'll have to wait long this time.
The biggest compliment i can give it right now is that it provides a great basis for future entries. Gonna have to sit with this for a few days and formulate my thoughts, what a ride!

It definitely feels like it could’ve been more epic, given the title of the game and the dev time, but I’m happy with what we got.
My biggest complaint is a lot dialogue didn’t fit the nature of what was happening. Trapped on a planet filled with monsters and a lot of the characters are so calm and lighthearted about it. Then at the end suddenly it’s dark af and samus basically leaves everyone to die lol. The atmosphere was all over the place. It felt like a Metroid prime game and a completely different game mashed together in a strange way.
I still think the game was a lot of fun though, and hard mode provides a unique challenge, just smaller scale then I expected given the circumstances.

Idk man; the hype for this faded pretty quick post-launch, so word of mouth mustn't be too hot to help it gain sales momentum.
Most critics calling it average or just decent and being too fixated on some aspects that didn’t really matter aren’t helping the continuation of the Prime subseries.
And from the fans’ perspective, obviously I can’t speak for others collectively, but are we going to be clamoring for a Prime 5 after it’s all said and done? Seems unlikely tbh
Still grateful that Prime 4 exists, and I wouldn’t mind if the series took a long break until it comes back with something new & fresh (though a brand-new 2D Metroid would be nice in the interim, preferably NOT by MercurySteam)
Nintendo really deserves props for reviving fan favourites/deep cuts in the Nintendo catalog these last few years (Prime, 2D Metroid, Advance Wars, Another Code, Tomodachi Life, Kirby Air Ride, 3D Donkey Kong, etc.).
And I hope they keep it up with Star Fox and F-Zero.

we'll just have to see how much the game sells here, it already seems like it flopped in japan which is regular for metroid already but best case scenario its maybe slightly above prime remastered numbers.
seems like from some of the posts itt the ending leaves interpretation for a prime 5? idk i didnt finish yet but i wouldnt mind another one given they dont take as long as this did and reassess with made the original trilogy so great.
also how come you wouldnt want mercurysteam to do another 2D metroid?

There’ve been reports of a toxic work environment during the development of Dread and even during their latest release so it seems like things are still awful there.
Samus Returns & Dread were still pretty decent but not as memorable as the other games in the series, so perhaps Metroid could use some fresh talent?
Keep the series away from Team Ninja and Next Level Games though lmao

ah i okay see
ngl i played a decent bit of dread when waiting for my prime 4 copy to come and it seems like the best since zero mission
i didnt play samus returns tho

Yeah the mismatch in atmosphere between when you're alone as opposed to when you're with the troopers can sometimes be too jarring, although in theory i don't necessarily mind a more crowded metroid campaign. If hollow knight and souls can evoke that feeling of loneliness despite the number of npcs so can Metroid, it just needs better writing.
Speaking of writing, Sylux needed a lot more screentime, he's supossed to be the main villain but he only appears at the beginning and at the end. He does villain s\*\*\* behind the scenes but the lack of dialogue, monologue, hell an actual presence undermines his character. Don't know why the first two fights had to be against a fakeout. Hopefully next game will finally actually focus on him, Tanabe has been trolling enough

You don't like dread that much? To me its the best 2d metroid just under super, and slightly edges out zero mission because of those damn chozo statues that basically were the og myles mackenzie.
In general the fanbase is very positive about that game too.
On working conditions, I think if Nintendo wants to keep working with Mercury steam they'll have to buy them or something, retro faced the same problems with MP1 development and Nintendo bought them to sort the issue.
Maybe when their new development buildings construction and hiring sprees are over they'll take 2d metroid back in-house.
We're lucky Nintendo sees value in metroid despite poor sales, so the series has no risk of dying or anything
The viola tutorial had me lowkey wishing retro would do a f-zero game lol, but on the other hand switch 2 is full of racing games and fast fusion is already a spiritual successor so i feel it could end up being redundant

other m way overhated and underrated
the main complaint of samus' attitude in the game is the dumbest s*** ever to me since its suppose to be her at the very beginning with the federation and dealing with all the politics of that n her trying to oblidge so shes not as stoic yet in those flashbacks, and i also think some ppl way overexaggerate the stoicism of samus to begin with, but it makes sense there since its her back then
outside of the f***ey wii mote control that are awkward to get used too the game isnt bad and i like the gameplay - n its one of the few games you get real lore on the overall world of metroid instead of just tidbits or very focused slices

think it will be a few years before the next major nintendo racing game
the few critics of this game is dumb asl, not that the critics themselves but how some ppl try to apply and act like those critics are the whole game
the desert hub that is small a literally just a hub world to mostly get to point a and b and isnt even a major portion of the game
and the npc talk that is quick and doesnt bother you during actual levels, the only one annoying to me is the main dork dude but it doesnt ruin the game lol
then the dumbest complaint ive seen a few times - that its "just another metroid", yeah no s***, its a metroid prime sequel - what did you expect? if the game was radically different people would have a s*** fit - but also this is how sequels are lol idk what some ppl were expecting and imagined or what they could even imagine, have they not played the other primes? especially the metroid dread d***suckers are the ones really pushing this one.
stupid, i feel like this is going to get, for lack of a better explanation although not as dramatic, a wind waker type of retrospective in the next few years - nintendo fans complain about the most random s*** and idk what their fascination for sequels having to be radically different comes from just like they tried to s*** on tears of the kingdom for back in its first few months (tears is better than botw btw, its literally botw just tighter, more fleshed out and bigger with more to do and see, like a good direct sequel should be)

I still enjoyed Dread. The visuals, Emmi sections, and boss battles were highlights to me. The level design was disappointing though, and the forgettable soundtrack made traversing through the game’s world worse.
MercurySteam have proved themselves to be capable of tackling Metroid, but they should clean house—the way they handle things professionally definitely doesn’t align with Nintendo’s.
And I believe if they were to keep working on Metroid, they’ll use the same 3D art style.
My dream 2D Metroid would have a hand-drawn art style that matches the comic-esque artwork for Zero Mission:
Really makes you appreciate how good of a Metroidvania God of War is and that game wasn’t even trying to be one
unrelated to prime 4, but I just beat prime 1 for the first time ever with the remastered edition.
between this and Super Metroid, the series continues to have some of my all time favorite games make my personal top 10 list. I think this game is flawless. the level progression, atmosphere, gameplay loop, and soundtrack are incredible. I can’t believe this was originally crafted on the GameCube. Truly, a one of a kind experience and I hope that we can see Prime 2 & 3 remastered on the Switch 2. I would love to have the full series available on the current Nintendo console.
10/10

still didnt finish my first playthrough cos i considered doing 100% since i never done it for a metroid game but i just found out theres missable scans in the very first level that i didnt scan so going for 100% is useless now
finally finished this.....
thats a f\*\*\*ed up ending, if they actually fleshed out the characters itd be more impactful but i felt nothing
will post more thoughts later
i genuinely dont think i ever seen someone utter the words "we need an open world metroid"
they've somehow made a more barren game adding the damn hub in the first place. i'm scared to see what the original bandai namco prime 4 was supposed to be now lol
So this is one of the worst Metroids of all time?
