It sounds like the dude in the tweet is expecting underground hip hop from a mainstream playlist lmao
exactly
Was the payola and label promotion of the past when it comes to radio and music channels , promotion in stores, really that different... Just different platform now.
Yes, because there were several outlets outside of consuming music through radio
i don’t trust any no name artist spotify or apple tries recommending to me
You're missing out
I use the release radar on spotify for weekly drops from artists I liked or that that they're featured on which also recommends other stuff...also use the new release list for stuff outside my usual listening and check out leaked sites just to see new drops as well not even to download lol still miss the occasional dope one that flew under my radar there's just a lot of music out there now

k
you still got a lot of people that just go off whats being played on the radio which is usually some mid and as a result you get the "there's no good new music out there anymore"...and if you got kids, jobs, marriages, etc. that are taking a lot of your time and attention then you probably don't have the time or patience to actually seek it out as much
Don’t think I’ve ever listened to a premade playlist besides my 2023 Spotify wrapped playlist
Yeah cause we aren’t casual music fans lol we’re a very niche group of people whether niggas want to admit it or not.
Everyone I know that isn’t hardcore into music goes by these playlists more than they do albums
Name them
Rap
R&B
Alternative
Soul
Gospel
Trance
House
Bass (I guess you could group the last 3 under electronic but there’s distinct differences)
Afrobeats
Dancehall (old & modern)
Reggae/riddim
Jazz (west african, Japanese, Cuban)
Reggaeton
Dub
Pop
IDM (techno type s***, some D&B and industrial be hitting like crazy too)
Rumba (strictly Congolese or Kenyan)
Acoustic
Classical/orchestra (almost a must being a trombone player lol)
Ska
Probably some others I’m missing but yea, I tend to go through a bunch of these daily and my playlists usually have a fine mix of everything listed or a select few that relate to each other. Classical kinda on it’s on tho, that s*** more background to set a mood than active listening lol

So cater to the casuals or build a niche group that keeps you fed it’s not rocket science

Or the playlists can be more diverse? I’d hate if you were in charge of MTV in the 80s with this mindset. You’d just tell Michael Jackson to make music like Quiet Riot or continue to be stagnated lmfao
Nah name the artists
I’m a nerd for this s*** so I’ll deadass make a spreadsheet one day and come back to this thread haha

Commitment on 10
Playlists are the new radio. Any playlist created by Apple or Spotify on the app homepage is guaranteed to be compromised by payola and industry bullshit.
Labels have been figured out that younger listeners do not listen to radio anymore, so they had to take over the DSPs in order to reach them.
But there are some dope user-created playlists, you just have to look for them.
popular hip-hop playlists will have the most popular, same, artists. they do have more "underground" playlists like spilled ink or ?jazz rap, but it's put at the bottom of genre pages. obviously if you want to cater ease of use for mainstream audiences you'll put the mainstream playlists front and center
