They don't have to be but they usually are.
Mad Max is a good movie game, same with the Alien survival horror game, I just don't think Western devs have the competancy to translate an Ip the way Japanese devs do.
The new Dragon Ball game was great it was very slice of lifey without being a drag, same with the fist of the North Star game. These are the exception not the rule tho. Honestly I can't think of many western IPs that would make good games tho
This isn't what I mean with the term "movie game", I mean games that try to give a "cinematic experience"
Metal Gear Solid 4 is definitely a movie game, and my argument is fair. Glad you enjoy Last of though.
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty - All Cutscenes (5:24:11)
The Last Of Us Remastered All Cutscenes (1:31:49)
so what exactly makes The Last of Us a movie game?
Nope and may not until I feel like buying a PS5 for the remastered version
Bruh out here talking about how the gameplay is boring and he didn't even play it. Foh
but this is like critiquing a Kendrick album after it drops without even listening to it

The Last Of Us Remastered All Cutscenes (1:31:49)
so what exactly makes The Last of Us a movie game?
Restricted player choice, forced slow walking mechanics, exaggerated narrative where gameplay feels secondary, I didn't feel like I was playing a game, I felt like I was watching a movie, a good movie.
Need a remaster of this now
u seen/played bfbb rehydrated?
u seen/played bfbb rehydrated?
Of course
Before i played it I thought it would be too bright but when i started playing it i can't stop staring at how vibrant and colorful it is especially compared to the original which i still have
video games that take themselves too seriously are generally trash
I agree and disagree. I think Western "movie games are poorly written"
JRPGS and Japanese games have a f*** ton of story but they are good. I could play the f*** out of MGS, Persona, or Silent Hill but stuff like Uncharted is so boring and uninteresting. It's just that western games are so focused on being these "mature" games begging to be taken seriously. That something like the Last of Us II feels like a satire at some times, compare that to a Yakuza Persona 3,4,5 even main line SMT that aren't so hyper focused on fitting into one mold or idea so they feel fun they feel human. Like Yakuza has some sad moments but you can also play Karaoke and goof off
Remakes are overrated
What do you mean when you say "definitive" type of games
If we are talking popularity / sales, feel like something like a COD, FIFA, 2K, GTA, Fortnite, etc would be that
More story driven, linear games are popular but I wouldn't call them the industry standard when there is so much diversity and different genres

The game of the year labels they are given along with being labeled masterpieces
They just might be but at the same time, new generation will be a leap in technological milestone so we shall see.
Just because you play games just to relax doesn't mean everyone else does. Some people play games to get immersed in an impactful story, engage in stressful but rewarding gameplay, etc.
Also what you're talking about for repetitive gameplay makes no sense. Every game has a gameplay loop. Whether it's good or you enjoy it is something else. DOOM has the most repetitive gameplay loop I've seen in a modern game but that s*** is fun asf and that's all that matters.
I feel like this is semi bait, but anyways.
This is truly case to case. Because something like TLOU 1 & 2 are still very fun to play to me, especially wit how flawless they are on a mechanical level.
Now something like Super Mario Odyssey (One of my top 5 of all time.) is infinitely more fun in the sense that that’s it’s only purpose, and so games like that, Pokemon, etc. are a lot easier for me to binge and fly thru because 6 hours will fly by like one and they’re less of a grind.
But I also have a massive appreciation and respect for games like TLOU, RDR, etc., and all the work that went into them.
I enjoy both for different reasons. They’re both different experiences and serve different purposes and there’s room for both.
Is Phantom Pain was a movie game but super fun too
i guess it depends /thread
It definitely wasnt
not an argument
if the last of us is a movie game, what is metal gear solid?
and i say this as someone that thinks 2/3rds of ps4 exclusives are garbage, just not because they're "movie games"
MGS is the worst exemple because even though it has a ton of cutscenes, the gameplay in the series has always been cutting edge and fun and different with each instalment and the story is used to expend the gameplay and the gameplay is used to expend the story
