You either remain independent and get little to no money (unless you tour relentlessly, 200+ days a year). Or you sign to a (major) label and have to sacrifice (potentially) a lot of artistic integrity, not own your music (read: Masters), have to be a slave to what your label wants you to do and do it when they want you to do it. Suddenly, as a signed artist, you know that - despite being signed - you could still be dropped or shelved. Major labels sign about 700 acts per year (google.co.uk/amp/s/www.rollingstone.com/pro/features/are-the-major-record-companies-signing-too-many-artists-847697/amp), and - out of that - only about 10-20 artists (max) really make a name for themselves; and, out of that 10-20, only a handful end up having longevity (especially in hip hop).

Quite sad, really. Don’t know why it’s only the music industry (out of most entertainment-based industries) that seems to have such a poor level of sustainability (career-wise)

The money isn't really the reason you'd do it

Yeah it must suck being rich and famous or doing something you love for a career. Like the vast majority of humans aren't wage slaves doing s*** they hate.

But, unless you really make it big, a lot of (probably most) musicians make less than minimum wage (even with extensive touring)

Oh, for real? Well done bro

Sometimes being put in the right placements/playlists can make things very profitable, particularly as an independent artist

Depends on what you mean by “plenty of money”.
