What do you get from an album combining the talent of Common and College Dropout era Kanye West? You get a match made in heaven, and another masterpiece from Common. Within the second that the music begins, the punches are packed and it does not let up until it’s finished. At a brisk 43 minute runtime, this is a shorter, but just as impactful listen as any of Commons other work. If anyone questions Kanye’s position as a top 5 producer, just link them this album. His production is absolutely magnificent here and is a perfect match for Commons great poetic flows and storytelling. From the genius sample chopping on “Testify” to using John Mayer as a repeated sample on “Go!”. This album also includes amazing production from the late Jay Dee and Kareem Riggins that works perfectly alongside Ye’s chipmunk soul. The final song on here produced by them is inspiring and heartwarming. I was so happy to hear Pops give us more spoken wisdom. And Common? Boy hasn’t lost a single step here. Be is everything it should be and so so much more. What else can I say?

Perfectly written. Glad you enjoyed this masterpiece
Loving this thread
With all great scores besides his debut has Common became one of your favorite rappers?
Aside from a few songs here and there, Common isn’t really someone I would listen to daily. His poetic style has definitely grown on me a lot over the last few albums but it still took me a second to adjust to hearing that sort of flow.
But my respect for him has grown immensely. Dude has had a great great discography so far that has earned him a spot in my top 15 all time rappers.
I think Resurrection, ODIAMS & Electric Circus range from good to great.
Like Water For Chocolate and Be are masterpieces and solidified all time classics.
The only real dud for me so far was his debut but I can give that a pass because it was his first project period and he hadn’t really found himself yet. Resurrection is his real debut.
Be seems to perfectly capture what makes Common special as an artist. I compare this album and Common to Stevie Wonder with the pure soulful joy that I get out of it no matter how cynical I am, it’s infectious. I consider this album hip hop’s Songs In The Key Of Life. Every song is so purposeful
You know what, I can't be mad at this comparison at all fr

I agree with this 100%
@op finna make me relisten to Common's discog man. Especially Electric Circus, because I still feel like that album should get more love.

Word I feel that, never been a huge fan of him either but obviously respect him, but like u I haven’t heard his entire discography and need to listen. Excited to see your thoughts on the later albums
Common as a person and a rapper, he just reflects his discography/music so well like his aura is just soulful and real. I always loved his music growing up
Be is by far his definitive album lmao. It’s encapsulates that style and soul/jazz in rap very well.

Common is one of those artists that you can't listen to with replay value, but when you listen to his music, it just speaks to you on a deeper level than many artists, and you just have to live with his music during a certain time period with your life, and it makes sense why not many people don't put him in the top 15 rappers of all time, but when you listen to his discography, it makes you reconsider his position in that list.
And besides that, he has one of the best diss tracks of all time against Cube

Real People stays slept on
“I live a cross from it some of it I do be in/ I be showing niggas lies like UPN”
“Black men walkin with white girls on they arms/ I be mad at them as if I knew they moms”
So many great lines in that song.

So many great lines in that song.
"Shorties sayin' ball or retreat
A lesson we all speak at one point or another
What you expect from one who smoke a joint with his mother
Anointed hustlers in a fatherless region
Through the pain wish they know that God was just teachin'
We want decent homes
So dreams we say out loud like speakerphones just to keep em on
It's like a colored song that keep keepin' on
I guess knowin' I'm weak is when I'm really bein' strong
Somehow through the dust I could see the dawn
Like the Bishop Magic Juan, that's why I write freedom songs
For the real people"
Then the way he kicks in the 2nd verse
"I wonder if the spirits of Bob Marley and Haile Selassie
Watch me as the cops be tryna and pop and lock me
They cocky, plus they mentality is Nazi
The way they treat blacks I wanna snap like paparazzi"
Those lyrics are still relevant af too

ill never forget how I first heard this album. I woke up early on Sunday and instead of getting up I put this s*** on with headphones and listened to it in bed reading lyrics. I had this album as one of the best albums that I EVER heard off of one listen, tears and everything
this is the one that I dont really go back to often which is why I forget why its so special but yeah its fantastic
So far this thread has been great. @op a little more generous with the scores than I would be (I would say ODIAMS is a 7.5 and Electric Circus is a 7.0) but other than that these reviews are spot on. Keep at it @op. The 2nd half of Common’s discog is on par with his first. Glad someone is finally shedding light on what I been saying for years. Common has one of the best discographies in rap history, probably top 5 discog if we being real.
Make sure you don’t forget his recent work like Let Love, Beautiful Revolution 1&2, and the August Greene group album.

It’s just how I feel
I think ODIAMS and Electric Circus are both underrated despite Electric Circus’s flaws. Especially ODIAMS. I personally liked that one more then Resurrection.
But thank you and I won’t forget his later work.
Today I’m going out DoorDashing and listening to his seventh album.
I’ll give you guys a short review when I’m done.
