I have playlist that I've made for working out, driving, for dozens of particular artists, 90's, oldies, early 2000's, and I forget that 99% of people are not like this lol

In fact, the vast majority of people who consume music are not only not like this, but they're not on twitter or KTT talking about music and that's what the streaming platforms are focusing on.

It does introduce people to new artists/more artists/smaller artists than the same kind of casual listener would have found twenty-five years ago (before even Napster was a thing) only listening to the radio

So you aren’t stuck in your comfort zone in a sense — people do gradually wind their way into different genres and such… BUT you are going down the paths and experiencing the new horizons only that the algorithm lays out for you. It’s like some Truman Show s*** in that way

I think this is actually a pretty cool feature, despite being a disgusting music elitist, because I recognize that pre-curated lists of music is a big part of how I became that way

It’s not like I independently discovered every single album on pitchfork’s BEST OF THE 70s/80s/90s list, I just read them when I was fifteen and dutifully torr— purchased everything that sounded good

But what Spotify is increasingly able to do is to bring that urge to discover new music under its control

It’s an enclosure of the very idea of leaving one’s comfort zone
