the Oscars won't affect the impact this left on me but I do hope there's an upset win like Moonlight/Parasite & it takes the big prize, just for the public exposure it'll get (probably wont happen)
i did not care for this. it insists upon itself
wtf you talmbout get your critiques out

Didn’t see that one, I’ll check up on it. Are you Black? Not that any criticism is invalid if otherwise but I’m curious if there is any aspect of identity and empathy that relates specifically to the film.
I have quibbles with the film but I think the things the movie succeeds at are pretty marvelous that I know this will definitely be a personal classic.

im not black but i am american. im also not a boomer that grew up in the 60s when this takes place.
im not against the stylistic elements on paper but they simply did not work for me.
how did y'all feel about the archival footage throughout?
the use of defiant ones felt somewhat on the nose and maybe me think a bit too much about Sidney Poitier as a complex figure. I did not respond to the NASA stuff.
It reminded me a bit of video pieces like the work of Arthur Jafa
I think it doesn’t translate as well to narrative features but Ross employed similar techniques in Hale County and it was a lil less jarring there imo. But on the whole I think it was cool and a fun experiment.

so important to contrast what was going on in the world while these atrocities were goin on
I know my mother loved me. She just loved liquor more.
Ehh this was cool. None of these best picture noms have moved me for real outside of The Substance a little bit and maybe Dune
I am not black but I did not connect with this at all. I found the first person POV incredibly distancing. Difficult to get any sort of emotional foothold. Works better as an editing showcase for poetic imagery. Less sold on the dialogue, and the tone, and I just don't feel like it works a lot of the time when characters are delivering their lines straight to the camera.
this hit me on a different level man. what an absolute incredible debut. a modern day classic. This and Sing Sing are such great pieces of art and are going unnoticed. I would love either of these movies to win an Oscar.

what kind of bullshit comparison is this lmao

As someone who loves this I don’t fully disagree, there are moments that feel like a first feature for sure and then there are performances that worked better for me on a second viewing.
I think there are moments that are so revelatory that it doesn’t matter and Ross really taps into sublime filmmaking that makes this an instant classic.
Can’t fault folk for not connecting but I felt this on a deep level. Funnily enough I hate Tree of Life bc of the perspective. This movie I related to it in a way I relate to a Chris Marker movie but never seen a Black story be afforded this kind of imagination at budget.
I guess if the shorthand and experience is foreign to you, this movie may fall flat. Some white folk in front of me straight up walked out of this halfway through lol

I'd definitely be willing to give it another shot. Not immediately, but down the line. Seems like there's a lot to dissect and pick apart, and a lot that only might become apparent on a second viewing. Also very interested in checking out this director's first feature, because I've heard that really leans into the visual poetry.

Definitely do it, it’s on criterion relatively short and maybe less challenging cuz it’s a doc and contemporary. It’s really cool, I checked it out after hearing a Ross interview. He’s also a pretty compelling speaker.
