Where are you getting this information from? I read your post and searched for data – surveys, polls, peer reviewed articles – to confirm that hiphop is the “#1 genre in the world that the 3rd biggest would have to multiply 8x to get as big as btw” and couldn’t find anything, aside from an article from “unchainedmusic.io” (???) which cites no sources and “driveresearch.com”, which DOES cite sources but not many (if not NONE) of which back up this claim. Am I missing something?

And in the EXTREMELY UNLIKELY event that you are correct and are able to cite a credible source for this claim, how many of these streams and sales are coming from legacy artists, like Kendrick, Kanye, and Drake? BEcause I highly doubt that the bulk of those streams and sales are coming from checks notes Fakemink lol

Rap is declining BUT there is no correlation to other genres rising to take its place

ALL MUSIC is struggling or barely improving and we keep hyper fixating on rap because it’s the biggest when really it has just peaked way higher than any genre ever had and is regressing back to the mean

How is music struggling when listenership is up as a whole

because the population has increased by a billion people twice in the last 20 years and continues to increase at the same rate? more listeners doesn’t mean music isn’t struggling, it’s just means there’s more superfans and listening options but it’s not reflecting in consumer behaviors

lol that’s the US market – not the WORLD like you argued, moron. And it also isn’t “8x” as bigger than the third genre, DUMBASS. And YEA IT IS IN DECLINE, which further proves my overall point - your “cool”, “artistic” niche sounding subgenre of hiphop is hurting the genre as a whole. And you still haven’t addressed who is doing the heavy lifting for the genre when it comes to these stats BECAUSE THAT MATTERS IN THIS DEBATE: Kanye, Drake, Kendrick, Jay, or Jack Skelington and Fakemink? I think we all know who is carrying this genre and my guy, it isn’t your favorite Spotify rapper

Why even engage with someone saying mckinley dixon and lucy bedroque "literally sound the same"

why even engage with someone tryna discuss who and who in the rap is declining thread (this was a joke)

    He just said it wrong

Back then when Drake dropped best I ever had people said on this guys going to be the next big thing. When Kendrick was coming up people said he’d be the next best rapper alive. Cole with his athlete mixtape series. I was wrong but I thought Lupe would end up becoming a GOAT. Thought Jay Electronica would contend to be the best rapper alive.

We don’t need someone to come out the gates and be a Kanye but when’s the last time someone even came out that you could look at and say yeah he’s gonna run this one day

it’s because these niggas creative pallets are Carti, that swole zoomer screaming nigga Jaleel, Rex Orange County bedroom pop diddler, and whatever else they can mash together to be original and different then call it rap

you completely dismissed the artist you liked to prioritize mocking the ones you didn't and that sums up my issue with the mindset behind those kinds of comments

This is worse than it looks when you consider R&B is having a record year, and they combine both genres on there.

I came to KTT after seeing a tweet on the Billboard news to see if you guys are still in denial about the artistic decay and general popular decline of hiphop and yea nothing has changed lol all of these artists literally all sound the same and have such thick, unpleasant, niche sounds that there is absolutely NO WAY this genre will recover and thrive above the underground ever again. Idk if i’ll check for any responses to this since I visit this place once or twice a year at this point, but for those who will reply - or read this and roll their eyes – congrats. You won. I lost. Your music won. Your music survived. You condemned the genre to obscurity, but hey, at least you’ll have Spotify artists like untilJapan to check out at your local 2,000 seat theater every once in awhile!

untiljapan doesn’t sound like McKinley Dixon who doesn’t sound like Lucy bedroque who sounds nothing like fakemink lol just be pulling s*** out yo ass

    Record year? In what way?

I mean compared to the last few years the genre is doing great. Big albums, songs.

  • Oct 30, 2025

Current releases for all genres were streamed 3.3% less in 2025 than 2024 meaning overall, new music is down slightly even though total streaming increased.

Hip-Hop/R&B specifically were down 9.2% less.

if you take out R&B, the number only changes by like .5% which is why they just include it lmfao

another overstated statistic is R&B’s “record” year. shoutout more people listening tho, but it still severely behind other genres
