You as an artist sometimes have a responsibility to clarify what you make though.

Yes lol. If I made a poster as a designer to give the message "I don't like war." But a general audience arrives at a different conclusion then

A) I didn't do a good job delivering the message
B) The message was lost to the viewer for various reasons
C) The viewer's life experience had them read it differently

Why wouldn't I as an artist clarify it at all? It's my message.

After that, if no one listens then you stand by your work or you walk away from it since it's a living piece far removed from you

Except art being left up to the listener's interpretation is legit one of the things that make art itself special. If every album from now on came with "well this song was about" blah blah blah from this point on you take away the magic from figuring it out yourself.

There's a reason very vivid artists like Mach Hommy make DMCA requests against rap genius for putting his lyrics on (besides most the times they get the lyrics wrong or random users REACH explaining certain lines but them making money off of someone else's words), let the listener figure it out.

It's why I'm glad even though for such a packed and loaded album that Kendrick just let Mr. Morale talk and didn't do any interviews explaining or clarifying any comments on the album.

For example: I think most people (that aren't certain fanbases that can't let s*** go) could tell just by the fact she named herself that those bars in namesake weren't disses as much as they were references. Besides Jay Z of course.

She is influenced by him which is why she holds him to such a high standard.

If I had to guess she’s a fan of him or was at a point but just doesn’t agree with particular ways he moves

This album being as amazing at it is and not getting any looks online or anywhere else is exactly why I don’t want to hear s*** about music quality.

The same folks that commented on her vs Cole or jay elects verse isn’t discussing the album. But in a few months they will tweet, “rap is derivative and no one has substance anymore”.
