Bieber was nominated for best pop song and The Weeknd was nominated for best R&B song (Blinding Lights) at the last vmas

Do you remember what the Bieber song was?

also doesn't The Weeknd still label his stuff as R&B? or at least his recording company

i don't usually play devil's advocate like this but I can honestly see that being a valid point. Them just using the genre the artist has generally placed themselves in

Bieber song was Intentions. Which would’ve been called an R&B song if a black singer made it, especially with a quavo feat

Ok but didn't the rockstar s*** 100% have to do with aesthetics and the overall energy they brought to their persona and lifestyle? I don't think that fits in the conversation tbh let's stick to the "artist" thing

I'm glad you mentioned the Frank thing, why do you feel he deserves a pass? Because of all of the other non-musical projects he's been a part of?

I'll also have to take your word on rappers who "put their genre down" but I almost want to assume that's more what the outside audience implies and takes away from what the artist actually wants to portray.

I don't think y'all give these artists/rappers enough slack at all. But idk it's just different views I feel you on your points. Thanks for engaging

im putting rockstar under the same umbrella term “artists”. basically any label that tries to put something up at the expense of something else. But tbh I never really put their lifestyles and personas into the mix and always thought they were talkimg about how they created music. That makes sense tho lol u right.

Im talking bout how “high art” critics used to put down graffiti and street art calling it “low art” thats what i be thinking. But its honestly all context and how they say it when it comes to music

And yea, i dont see frank as a songwriter/singer honestly. I see him as a dude who just be doing dope s***, like an MF DOOM. And content creator dont really seem all that pretentious to call urself. Honestly seems like an undersell if u create art. Thats why he gets a half pass, only half cause he still labeled himself lol. Its more a me thing tho im not tryna speak for the whole game

Last paragraph is a good point as well

agree, what do you think about my other point? do we even know if it's the artist/label setting the genre labels on iTunes/streaming? must be if they're the same across all platforms right

Beyoncé albums are all pop? Why did pop radio not play any of her 2010s stuff? Why was her 2010s stuff not nominated for pop Grammys?

pop radio didn’t play her 2010s stuff??

just her beyoncé album alone had partition and drunk in love, the latter of which went 3 times platinum and most certainly played on every radio station everywhere lol

    pop is an actual genre

true, but it encompasses many sub genres

Although much of the music that appears on record charts is seen as pop music, the genre is distinguished from chart music. Identifying factors usually include repeated choruses and hooks, short to medium-length songs written in a basic format (often the verse-chorus structure), and rhythms or tempos that can be easily danced to. Much pop music also borrows elements from other styles such as rock, urban, dance, Latin, and country.

White pop radio has not played a new Beyoncé single since single ladies and halo. Contrast Adele and Taylor Swift to her.

I don't want to sound woke but I'll explain this for you brother

Whites hate rap that's why they think calling you a rapper is a bad thing. You believing that being a rapper is bad just gives them power. Rap is one of the greatest forms of art and they know that so they want to destroy it. They're using reverse psychology to convey the thought that we shouldn't want to be a rapper so hip-hop loses its importance. When you disrespect and spit on the culture by abandoning it acting like it's not real art they get what they want. Don't let whites control your thoughts. Being a rapper is an incredible achievement.

you’re acting like this is some psyop

    it’s not that deep

99% of old white folks don’t like rap, for one reason or another, so yeah they see it as a bad thing

everyone else, in like the whole word, loves rap (it’s the most popular genre atm, no?)

and there are more people <50+ years old so i’d say the majority are not trying to do anything subconsciously or consciously for that matter

This facts. But I agree cause something about rappers scoffing at the idea of being called rappers because they view it as "lowly" has always rubbed me the wrong way. What's wrong with being called a rapper? Especially when all you f***in doing is rapping about some bullshit and getting renegaded by the producer?
