Just wanna see if anyone out there has some dope suggestions. here's a few of mine for now:

This is Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. One of the most soothing, emotional and healing anime I've ever seen. Please give it a try if you want to learn about its bizarrely peaceful post-apocalyptic version of the future Kanagawa region of Japan. In the series, you learn about a highly advanced android named ALPHA, and her daily life taking care of the coffee shop her owner left her when he suddenly took off to travel the world. After a catastrophe, the human race is in its twilight years, and ALPHA is humanities eternal witness, since she has a immortal machine body.

There are two sets of two OVA's and the original manga. I would suggest watching the first two OVA's as an introduction to the series, then check out the manga. It's a series that really helped me over the past year and more during the pandemic and dealing with the monotony. This series re-taught me to find the beauty in my daily life, truthfully. I highly suggest you check it out.

This is Angel's Egg. Some of you might know this, but all of you should know about it. Especially if you want some insight into Kanye's influences, since he was inspired by this animated film a year or more ago. Thankfully the entire thing is up on YouTube, as linked above so its very easy to access (also btw so is YKK above, ask me and ill reply with links)

Don't wanna spoil much about this film other than:

1: its directed by Mamoru Oshii, who also directed Ghost in the Shell and the Urusei Yatsura films, so basically an animation god.
2: Its very slow and has little dialogue, but give it patience and the payoff will be worth the wait.

Anyways, you guys have some cool, obscure suggestions for anime/manga? would like to find some more older stuff (or new f*** it) that's a little off the beaten path, lemme know.

    how obscure is obscure

  • Idk how obscure you want it but i like Kaiji a lot, doesn’t seem like it gets the love it deserves. Give that a try?

You know what, I'll actually participate this time because OP had a decent start with YKK.

Kouya no Kotobuki Hikoutai (MAL Popularity Ranking: #3288) - If you ignore all non-action scenes (which is easy to do since half of each episode's runtime is dedicated to action scenes) I'd say this anime has the best cinematography I've ever seen in the medium. Wonderfully dynamic scenes that made me feel I was there in the moment. Also great sound design if you're a sound design nerd.

Akanesasu Shoujo (MAL Popularity Ranking: #3118) - I have a sweet spot in my heart for these low-budget shows that exceed expectations. It looks like s***, but a lot of care was put into its writing. The character writing is a particularly strong point as the characters are forced to confront aspects of themselves that they hate the most and do some serious introspection.

Tamayura (MAL Popularity Ranking: #2809) - A beautiful iyashikei about a girl overcoming the grief of losing her father and taking up his hobby of taking photographs. OP, if you liked YKK I think you'll enjoy this too (and the Aria series as well.)

Shakunetsu no Takkyuu Musume (MAL Popularity Ranking: #2805) - One of the best soundtracks of all time. This show is pure f***ing hype in ping pong form.

before you watch i should let you know theres 3 different series for it: the ova (the new files), the movies, and the tv show

the ova is about 7 episodes and its where i would recommend watching first since its short and should probably help to see if the series catches your attention

there's three movies and they're more serious in tone than the ova & tv series. the first two are pretty good and the third one is decent but it's usually considered the weakest of the three

the tv show is about 40 episodes and its more on the comedic side than the other 2. still a fun watch and something nice to put on when you wanna just relax and watch something
