Iight @op, compiled a list.
Ninja Scroll (1993). Classic by Yoshiaki Kawajiri one of the most greatest anime directors of all time. He went on a crazy run in the 80s & 90s. Solid fight scenes, great character designs. Some sexual violence I havent watched it in a while so I cant remember if its shown or implied.
Wicked City (1987) by the same director. Horror, dark urban fantasy with a sleek neon-noir aesthetic. Violent as hell and not for the faint of heart. But a dope watch as well.
Demon City Shinjuku (1988) Another movie by the same director. Closer to a typical shonen story & pretty tame for a Yoshiaki Kawajiri movie but still enjoyable.
Neo - Tokyo (1987) a sci-fi anthology movie by Yoshiaki Kawajiri and is also a collab with Katsuhiro Otomo (who would go on to direct AKIRA the next year.) & Rintaro (director of Metropolis)
Appleseed (1988). Classic 80s anime film with a cyberpunk aesthetic, somewhat cheesy dialogue , dope action and a good soundtrack. It's an adaptation of the manga Appleseed created by Masamune Shirow who would go on to create the Ghost In The Shell manga.
Memories (1995) a sci-fi anthology film like Neo - Tokyo except it's a collab between Katsuhiro Otomo, Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue, Paprika, Paranoia Agent) & Tensai Okamura (Darker than Black). Movie is nuts.
Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad (2004) - An amazing anime about music and chasing your dreams. These 5 Japanese kids get together to start a rock band and make it big in America. So many easter eggs and shout outs to music. If you end up liking the anime check the manga out, it goes deeper
Biggest surprise of the year for me, wasn't expecting to like it as much as i did at all
Now and then here and there.
Sorta like an isekai but it's def a surprise nothing like sao or the sort . it has problems i have with most 12 eps anime but it's a good watch despite it's couple of flaws.
KARE KANO ~ His and Her Circumstances
Here's another one, just finished this recently. REALLY enjoyed this series. It's a romance anime that adapts the manga of the same name. This adaptation was directed by Hideaki Anno, so it's a show that isn't super obscure, but I definitely don't see it talked about too much compared to Eva.
Two model students struggle with the fake lives they've constructed, and they both help each other to take their masks off and be themselves, lovey dovey niceties follow. I will say though, I'm going to be reading the manga soon, because this adaptation ends very abruptly in the middle of a story arc. Almost makes me wonder if a second season was originally planned. What's here though is very sweet, hilarious and has Anno's directing/editing quirks all over it. Highly recommend this.

bruh I swear you're bringing back that early 2000s era for me where I was discovering anime and manga through Viz, ADV and Tokyopop. I dead used to have a subscription to Anime Insider and thats how I remember Kare Kano

yes, f***ing incredible show personally enjoyed it more than even Eva. i dont even know if i wanna check the manga either since i just cant imagine this series without anno's style all over it, but i might just to see how it ends

but i’m still gonna read it, i can’t deal with that abrupt ending
