KARE KANO ~ His and Her Circumstances
Here's another one, just finished this recently. REALLY enjoyed this series. It's a romance anime that adapts the manga of the same name. This adaptation was directed by Hideaki Anno, so it's a show that isn't super obscure, but I definitely don't see it talked about too much compared to Eva.
Two model students struggle with the fake lives they've constructed, and they both help each other to take their masks off and be themselves, lovey dovey niceties follow. I will say though, I'm going to be reading the manga soon, because this adaptation ends very abruptly in the middle of a story arc. Almost makes me wonder if a second season was originally planned. What's here though is very sweet, hilarious and has Anno's directing/editing quirks all over it. Highly recommend this.
