USSR didnt destroy it, Afghanistan back then was more peaceful prosperous and equitable, the then-government invited the USSR inside to fight off the US & China supported fundamentalists

It was the USA (and China) who funded the religious fundamentalists that led to the downfall of Afghanistan

Same groups have fought against their former master and won now

a absolute s***show.

They thought the US military would stop and not jeopardize their lives, they thought they had a chance to get onboard

Now their surviving relatives learned the cold hard truth that the USA never gave a single f*** about them to the point they couldn't care less about them falling down kilometers to their death

Seeing pictures of the CIA and Bin Laden from them funding the mujahideen will always be crazy to me

In the end this is just a tragic situation that feels like it cant really be fixed at this point

The best course of action is to just hope that the Taliban have evolved and will use their power responsibly. Theres no reason to be involved anymore

It should be noted that the US supported the Mujahideen before the USSR got involved, knowing that it would get them into a war they couldn't win and with the intent of that war contributing to the collapse of the USSR.
