one of the true metal heads i think
dont think they have any crossover appeal (no extreme metal does tbh) but def. generally appreciated as one of the main inventors of death metal and increasingly viewed as one of the best metal bands
with bands like Metallica or SOAD or Iron Maiden, you will hear about them more since a lot of people that arent metal fans will still like them. but something like this i feel that you have to be fully a metal fan to enjoy
would you consider this extreme
I honestly didn't but I still love it wholeheartedly
need to get into iron maiden more ngl
already had my metallica phase in HS
real, I think this is the case for most people
Death got way more plays on spotify than most of their peers tbh
during the time they were active they were less popular than a few bands like Deicide or Morbid Angel but now they have a lot more listeners and plays.
and checking now its actually really surprising to see Death have similar play counts as Cannibal Corpse or even a little more. Cannibal Corpse is the highest selling and most famous death metal band ever (and still active)
so Death's legacy is doing really well i think

yeah its absolutely extreme metal
its not the absolute heaviest death metal (still pretty melodic and progressive) but its extreme through the harsh vocals + crazy drums + distortion + riff heaviness
honestly 80% of what makes something 'extreme metal' is just the vocals being harsh. Chuck Schuldiner vocals are more intelligible than most death metal vocalists but its still all harsh screaming nonstop

never listened to their contemporaries before
Ig in HS I was mostly introduced to stuff like tool, alice in chains and a lil slayer
I kind of ignorantly just group things up

there's yelling but they're still intelligible
and yeah, like you said there's some melodies in here
like I usually consider stuff extreme when I legit cant tell what the hell they're saying

Morbid Angel is the other closest contender for GOAT death metal band i think
maybe a few others like Immolation or Suffocation
Cannibal Corpse is super iconic but theyre just alright for me, just consistently pretty good but never that good. also the edginess of the song titles/artwork/lyrics is so stupid lol

started writing this before I read your bit about being intelligible but yeah
it just appeared to me on the surface like it wasnt too heavy but im not the expert
@Prince peep bad bunny on last fm
Yeah, have seen the photoshoot.
I happen to be a big fan of Calvin Klein overall, to be frank -- their work with FKA twigs is also top-tier, marvelous.

Yes, hence "also" when mentioning twigs's photoshoot. :)

its also just the type of approach really. some types of 'extreme metal' arent as heavy as this but still have screaming, tons of double kick drums, speed, etc. like atmospheric black metal sometimes
'extreme metal' label is super broad anyway. but honestly if it has screaming and sounds farther off from what might be similar to dadrock, its probably extreme
and thrash is pretty much the borderline of extreme or non extreme

the ones that sound like theyre barely even in the rock category anymore too
like Iron Maiden sounds somewhat similar to Chuck Berry still if you stretch it...but Death is definitely getting super far away from even being in that genre really

in terms of being thrash, right?

@RVI ty ty
great album, appreciate the knowledge you've given me
I am a bit perplexed about where lines are drawn for certain genres, but we'll get there
in terms of being thrash, right?
yeah kinda, since thrash is the first one that broke away more from what "rock" is. like i say its kinda the borderline. and (almost) every extreme subgenre followed thrash.
also big reason why Metallica is one of the most important bands of the genre since theyre the first on the thrash metal scene
thrashiness is just one way to break away from rock tho, like you can also have a guy shrieking in the forest over barely discernible noise guitars. its not very thrashy but its not that rock really
or a guy gurgling over extremely slow loud music for 20 minutes
