yeah kinda, since thrash is the first one that broke away more from what "rock" is. like i say its kinda the borderline. and (almost) every extreme subgenre followed thrash.

also big reason why Metallica is one of the most important bands of the genre since theyre the first on the thrash metal scene

thrashiness is just one way to break away from rock tho, like you can also have a guy shrieking in the forest over barely discernible noise guitars. its not very thrashy but its not that rock really
