    melodyne might change my life

melodyne is a gift from god

def look up how to use it properly cause i used it before i went to school and they taught us the correct way to use it

that also included putting autotune right after it in the chain but lightly so it catches any off notes

also make your melodyne edits with autotune on

it should always come after melodyne in the chain

Yeah any professionally mixed song uses both unless it just only uses autotune

Just put the retune speed and humanize at around 30-35 or whatever you want depending on what sounds good to you but thats just the normal setting for its use i guess

  • Apr 19, 2023

Actually kinda weird that celemony doesnt add their own autotune thats built into melodyne like it would only make sense

first limiter crunches (at a low volume: ~6-8db)

second limiter brings it up to 0db

i already know somebody like "Well no s*** dumbass" F*** YOU BRO

Wouldn’t you just need to use an output gain on your first limiter instead of needing two?

Also it sounds like you just need mastering so probably a compressor also

The two limiter thing i was doing was really one being used as a clipper and the other as a limiter. I used to only use a limiter for loudness for years which is why my song were on the quoetter side compared to my peers.

    my chain nowadays

    • The final mix song is around -6db
    • Band filter (I cut 24hz and 15.5hz. Whatever I audibly can't hear)
    • Multiband compressor (2:1 soft compression for bass, mids, and highs)
    • Eq (I tend to mix bass heavy so I'll cut with a shelf if I need to and boost highs a bit)
    • Tape sound processor (personal preference)
    • Limiter ( I get around 1-2 dB compression)
    • Soft clipper (listen to loudness section of the songs on loop and push till it sounds like s*** then back off)
    • I do all this at a low volume with headphones also so if I hear distortion, it's easier to pick up on.

For my harder records, I might add a second clipper at the end of the chain too to get it extra crunchy

    Two things

First is you shouldn’t cut anything that isnt causing problems especially if you cant hear it

If your song gets played on big speakers then those are going to be the frequencies that you’re supposed to feel

Dont make any boosts or cuts for no reason. Always let there be a problem and then a solution to solve the problem

And secondly mixing in headphones for an actual mix isnt going to be the best because you cant get an accurate representation of where everything is in your mix

I highly recommend investing in a pair of studio monitors and even if theyre not that great at least you’ll be able to get a better gauge on your mix

Headphones vs monitors is like watching a 2D cartoon vs avatar in 3D

  • Apr 21, 2023

Headphones should be secondary to monitors as something that you check your mix with but not as a main mixing point

You dont get any crossfeed at all

if you have a macbook pro it would be better to tilt that towards your head and check your mix out since it has stereo speakers that arent bad tbh and you can get a bit of crossfeed but i still recommend monitors even if they’re cheap

this is interesting i always mix at the same volume i listen to music which is pretty much max, sometimes ppl say it sounds off at lower volumes or on poor equipment

My way of thinking is if I can't hear certain elements of the song at a low volume, then whatever I can't hear may as well not even be in the song. Therefore it needs to be brought up in volume. Also helps with stuff that's too loud and needs to be brought down some.

I got that from an old youtuber back on 2013 when I first started making music. Been doing it ever since.

  • Apr 30, 2023

I also swap between stereo and mono when finishing mixes to make sure every thing sounds good either way.

My older music is full of phased out sounds that are basically inaudible in mono and sounds terrible on Bluetooth speakers and phones
