Don’t really feel like watching the entire original 70’s Gundam show since I’ve tried before and it just seems strangely paced and awkward at times. My feelings on this have nothing to do with the animation style or tone or age, I’m familiar with anime of that era and enjoy plenty of it. However I’m really curious if the trilogy of films condensing it are a good alternative? They’re all on Netflix now alongside the Chars Counter Attack follow up to the series from the 80’s.
Edit: Okay so I got the 14 day Funimation free trial and I’m watching the full show subbed. It looks great. I’m totally gonna push through this time, I’m thinking it’s worth it.
2nd Edit: Finished it, it’s fantastic. I guess just make this the general Gundam thread.
Damn nobody can help me out lol
i havent see the trilogy but my understanding of them are that they pretty much compile the whole series into an 1 hour-ish length movie
personally i would just watch the whole series if i were you since they probably cut content from the show just to fit the timelength but if you really can't be assed to watch all 43 episodes then go ahead with the movies

Yeah I found an article basically saying the same thing. I’ll just try to go with the show again.
I watched the entire original anime and from what I’ve heard the trilogy movies cut out a lot of side character development. The side characters have a lot of dope moments in the latter half of the show tbh.
Yup, watch the whole series and then the films. But are you planning to watch all the saga? Cause if you're having trouble with 0079 I don't think you will like Zeta at all, or maybe you will, who knows, with Zeta you never know. You can watch War in the Pocket after the original I think, which is my favorite Gundam.
Amazing soundtrack

!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l24_0SH3VK8I don’t think I’ll have a problem. I like the style of it. Before I watched it years ago on my s***ty laptop. I think that was mainly the problem. I found it on Funimation on my tv and it looks great there with no problems. So I think I’ll be fine to push through the whole thing. I’m curious to watch more of the main timeline, universal century I think. When do I watch Char’s Counterattack?

Yeah I started on the Shining Gundam like years ago and never finished, everything else has just been collecting dust in a giant container in my closet. Been thinking about picking it back up, but too lazy.

I’m gonna watch the original series first, I already started it. I’ll definitely check out the movies tho. Curious to see what’s changed or cut out.
Any way to watch the rest of the Universal Century stuff. Original series is on Crunchyroll and Chars Counter Attack is on Netflix. The stuff in between I’m clueless where to look?

Yeah. Other than some of the janky animation and some of the reused shots which was clearly cause of budget constraints, it holds up pretty damn well in my opinion. I think late 70’s anime has a charming art style and the characters and themes are great on their own. I didn’t have many pacing issues. There were only a few episodes that felt filler like to me but there was always decent character development going on to make up for them. My favorite moments weren’t even the battles, it was just the crew hanging out.

glad you liked it
the characters are done really well especially considering the time that show came out. even the deaths hold importance throughout the show you can really see how hard the crew was affected by ryu and matilda's death. my only gripe with the show that i can think of is how late they introduced the newtype s*** but classic show nonetheless
