Yeah. The visuals were good but it’s really not THAT visual of a movie to the point where IMAX is necessary to fully enjoy it.
As far as the movie in general there’s a lot of great scenes and performances in it, but I thought the pacing was bad.
The clearance hearing & Strauss stuff were not interesting enough to justify that much screen time. The movie even acknowledges it at the end “hey Strauss maybe Oppenheimer & Einstein were actually talking about something more important than you.” Exactly so why did we just spend an hour+ on Strauss?
Edit: after sitting on it for a while and getting my thoughts together ima just admit it; this movie was very disappointing.
It completely lacks a centerpiece. The test bomb did NOT do it. The movie is 2 hours of build-up and 1 hour of fallout with no climax. I understand that it would’ve been tough to depict tastefully, but Nolan needed to show something from Japan to showcase the horrors of what Oppenheimer had done.
As it stands the movie is just hours of guys in rooms telling us that bombs are bad. There’s no captivating debate here, there’s no tension. I don’t care about Oppenheimer’s security clearance. I don’t care about Strauss’s cabinet confirmation.
I read American Prometheus prior to my watch, so the importance of the Strauss plotline made sense as it's an overarching piece of the book and the focus of roughly the last third. But I'd agree without the full context provided by the book its importance isn't made clear enough by Nolan. Still, I loved it, I thought the pacing and time jumps worked and I was pulled in for the entire runtime. On first watch I'd put it in my top Nolan movies. Gotta sit on it a bit longer to see where I'd rank it.
Also I didn't see a need for a close look at the Japan bombings. I think Nolan not including that was a smart (and tasteful) choice. Seeing the test showed us the raw power of the bomb, and we saw Oppenheimer's view of the bombings and their aftermath. We all know what happened, no need to show it on screen to realize its impact. We saw the creation and aftermath through Oppenheimer's eyes.

Plus we got hints of the destruction throughout. His foot getting caught in the ashen body.
We did not need to see it and although I craved it during the movie for some weird reason, I was happy he didn't include it walking away from the theater.
Truman really said "get this crybaby ass nigga out my office" I was dying lmaoooo
That's the moment Oppenheimer realized he wasn't built for this s***. loved it.
First page is full of geeks. Movie was a 10/10 classic
I’m saying did i watch the same movie as these people? I loved everything about this. It felt magical

you f***ing right , the bomb test was pure cinema.

Agree with this 💯

It also showed how it’s been taken completely out of his hands, he can only hear about it on the radio and it’s his baby practically

Dead silence, drops the famous quote, then BOOM
It also showed how it’s been taken completely out of his hands, he can only hear about it on the radio and it’s his baby practically
Exactly
People saying we needed to see that s*** are unhinged
That scene where Oppenheimer was giving that speech to those group of people was super intense
yeah i wish i didnt have to piss so bad it took away from the amazing moment for me sadly
That scene where Oppenheimer was giving that speech to those group of people was super intense
Genuinely made me anxious as hell
A 2nd watch did this justice wow even better than the first time
The scene where camera goes noticeably handheld and he’s throwing wine glasses while the scores going off
It also showed how it’s been taken completely out of his hands, he can only hear about it on the radio and it’s his baby practically
Yep, his newborn creation was quickly taken from his hands and used to devastating effect. We all have a mental image of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but seeing it from the creator's point of view is a fresh and frightening experience.

I'm trying to find time to watch again. The three hour runtime has no effect on my desire to jump back in.
Nolan was crazy for that “It’s oppin’ time” scene though
When he said “now I am become Oppenheimer” I got chills
Plus we got hints of the destruction throughout. His foot getting caught in the ashen body.

The speech scene was incredibly tense and nauseating. I don't think it would have the same impact if we saw the bombings. I also understand your want for that going into the movie — I'm sure for lesser directors it would've been a given — but he gave us something much more fulfilling.
Incredible movie, every actor killed it
So happy to see Rami in there aswell
I'm trying to place all the themes in the movie now. Have a crazy migraine but something I liked was how oppie was careless ay points in his relationships, politically and being told directly you are not just self important, you're actually important.
Also, the themes of theoretical science was always his thing but when executed in real time shows his flaws and the consequences of his actions.
There's something there, but yeah but my heads f***ing killing so I'll think about it more tomorrow
