And this weekend we got twister 2 by the minari dude hoping the execs didn't bully him too hard

This longlegs s*** is the first time I've ever seen Nick Cage in that light. Corny. Mandy is one of my favorite movies ever, and what a fantastic performance, obv on top of raising Arizona, wild at heart, etc. he's proven time and time again that he dives deep, maybe a lil crazily, and comes back up with something authentic. Every time, point blank period. This though? What the f***....is pretentious the right word? Like the movie did everything it possibly could to deflate him/how threatening he was...on top of the performance being Tumblr audition-core. On top of everything, imo making him not even be the killer was the ultimate misstep. He's literally just the messenger. This is between the giant baphomet PNG and Donna Haywards little sister. Why would you deflate your whole narrative like that in the 3rd act. I just don't get it, I really don't. And don't get how people are falling head over heels for this. Is it really just a "you need to see more movies" situation?

I think he's doing what he's called upon to do. It's what the story calls for. Because he's not the source of violence. Rock music is just this talisman that resonates with the broken social fabric. There's no systemic abuse in the film. It's all household family stuff.

And Cage is in 500 bad movies a year that ask him to be whacky. At least this one has a point. He's a producer so it's not like he just did it for a check. I thought his character was entertaining and interesting.

Still haven't seen Minari. Everyone is saying Twisters is good.

For this one, I don't know, what's the point? He's ostensibly creepy if he's like....a human being IRL in front of you. But in movie language...he's just a guy spouting s***. Characters have mixed reactions to him, not most of them fear. It's almost like he was a joke character, and he's the antagonist. The horror is real, but the perpetrator is a meme? Idk, it just didn't work for me. The entire movie is on that elevated, slightly stilted, slightly "campy" acting style, but he brings an almost ..parody like perspective to it that, I felt, did not serve to enhance the narrative or themes. At first I thought he was presenting non-binary, or like something of a care figure/"mother" but I don't think the movie even acknowledged that.

Do you think music was really that big of a motif? I noticed the lou reed posters and stuff, I know there's a lot of lyrics on the text slides.....but was most of his dialogue supposed to be lyrics too? I noticed most of the mothers dialogue seemed to echo his, like a fading transmission

    Also minari is good

Charles Manson is name-dropped. Failed rock artist who filled people's heads with a fantasy and manipulated them into doing his violence. He says something about killing him spreading his legend. And he's just a glam rock loser with fanboy posters everywhere. There's a copycat quality to him. kinda like how The Batman tried to reclaim the Joker as a loser loser. This one doesn't make the psycho out as a cool thing to aspire to

Anybody else assuming from the negative space in the movie that Longlegs is kinda inferred to be Harker’s dad? The killings start the year she’s born, she’s the only one who’s spared, IMO that’s the real “triangle” being completed: Mother, father, child. Most english speakers first verbal association with “longlegs” is gonna be the word Daddy. Ruth has a little bit of a reverse-Virgin Mary thing going on too, Longlegs is a craftsmen like Joseph and her child has abilities given to them by a spiritual superior

Plus there’s a fair amount of humor to be drawn from that, like having your villain tell the protagonist “Why don’t you go ask your mother about that?” or “You know you got the psychic stuff from *my* side of the family goddamnit!”

Edit: Oop! The upside-down pyramid image in Harker’s ESP test is assigned a meaning of “father” 👀

I think the writer would probably say I’m wrong but it still feels very much implied

But I’m not even sure I’d want it to be true, because this dude being a random freak stranger is way more frightening conceptually

It’s definitely better than Color Out of Space IMO but I didn’t care for that one much. Did you see Mandy?

I'm almost positive the writer doesn't have a straight answer to give on this topic tho

Even Perkins said his name is longlegs essentially "because". So take that for what you will

    This.

I'm starting to think these recent movies (horror or otherwise) get so much buzz because it's mainly people who aren't true kino-lovers

When I left i did think to myself I would have thought that was great if I hadn’t seen a bunch of other movies do everything this movie did and more, better

Seems like the critics who gassed this ain’t real kino lovers. It’s like any horror film that takes itself a lil seriously gets labeled the scariest movie ever in the modern era.

This s*** stinks. Totally uncommitted to its own lazy and rehashed concepts. Too much effort spent in the aesthetics to achieve a sense of significance that doesn’t exist anywhere in the script. Acting was bad— another detective on the spectrum! Yay! Zodiac for zoomers. F*** this

I think he’s a pretty smart and truly pretentious guy who will waffle between “well I’m not just gonna make a horror movie and put (blank) in it, that’s just so pat and boring” and “of course I’m gonna do (blank), it’s a horror film!” depending on who asks, like a lot of writers. One interview the serial killer thriller is the best thing that happened to the horror genre, the next interview he’s saying he didn’t want to make one 🤷‍♂️

The name gets explained in like the second line of the movie though, Cage says something like My, you’re so small! But it seems I wore my long legs today. Just some inspired pedo banter

I think it's a great film & absolutely love it.

But the marketing kinda' made it seem bigger than what it actually is.
