    You’re a good poster bro @thegreatdivine

    I'm a girl but thanks

What’s hilarious yet surreal is that the moment Jack marketed himself as the new face of this culture and the one to lead the next generation is when he got disapproved collectively

he hyped the album up like it was gonna be some sort of classic and all we got was bland ass music

Exactly most writers aren’t employed by a publications and are contracted for articles and reviews and then they get paid per impression etc so they chase viral quotes.

It’s partially pitchforks fault cause they popularised the meme review with the monkey peeing and the Gambino review but yeah the writing in music criticism has fallen off cause the journalists are more accessible now.

They also get paid under the table by labels

  • May 10, 2022

    pitchfork check must have bounced

  • Kako

Yer you can’t force that s***. It will never work.

It’s such an important title to give yourself the magnitude of work you need to validate that statement is underestimated. That’s why I sort understand why a lot of Kendrick stans prop him up as the “chosen one” maybe that way of thinking is antiquated but at the same time he earned every right to have that title you get me?

One thing about a music career, especially as a rapper, is that moments are VERY important. If you miss your moment, it's damn near impossible to get back the momentum/boost you would have gotten had you delivered. I believe that's something Big Sean is still paying for today. After following up a decent debut album in Finally Famous (2011) with Detroit (2012), he dropped the ball with the abomination that was Hall of Fame (2013) and even though he bounced back and dropped his best effort yet with Dark Sky Paradise (2015), there are people who gave up on him as soon as Hall of Fame happened. Dark Sky Paradise is still his best-performing album but that misstep is what kept him from being seen as one of the leaders of his generation today. It's quite sad when you think about it.

you always bring good, well thought out opinions to these discussions! you're 100% right about big sean

I don’t think this is even true

In 2022 when music sales are all time low no one really is going to purchase/not purchase an album based on reviews alone

Especially when you can stream anything.

Maybe 20 years ago sure but that’s what made pitchfork such a landmark

ofcourse they pick the easy white boy target

im here for it, but not surprised

Jack confidence is a facade and constructed by others he was afraid of being labeled a corny white rapper from the suburbs

Mac was confident though, he didn't need to put a show for nobody.

That’s one of things that made him great even if his authenticity made him a punching bag in the beginning he always stayed true to himself and decided to evolve on his own terms never compromising his art. I love him and didn’t get enough flowers for that

  • Man, those first 5/6 years of a mainstream career are SO important. That's when you prove why people should care to still listen to you moving forward.

    From 2009-2014, Cole dropped:
    The Warm Up
    Friday Night Lights
    Cole World: The Sideline Story
    Born Sinner
    2014 Forest Hills Drive

    From 2009-2015, Drake dropped:
    So Far Gone
    Thank Me Later
    Take Care
    Nothing Was the Same
If You're Reading This It's Too Late

    From 2011-2015, Kendrick dropped:
    Section.80
    Good Kid, Maad City
    To Pimp a Butterfly

If they drop mid in those years (probably the most crucial years of their respective careers), no one is talking about any of them the way they do today. I wish more rappers would realize how important the early years are and focus on delivering undeniable s*** because that's what sets you up in a way that even if you drop mid later in your career, people think about all the dope s*** you've given them before and are willing to give you another chance to redeem yourself.

I feel that Jack is trying to play too safe with his music, which is why it’s bland and boring

I know this is a criticism for a lot of artists but Jack Harlow songs sound made by AI to copy what's popular. To be the goat you have to experiment like every legend before. Eminem, Kanye, Wayne, Drake all brought something new to the table. Harlow is doing exactly what every other black rapper is doing but he's white and that's the only reason he got hyped up this much

Sad because this the perfect time to be as eccentric as ever there’s always someone out there that’ll love what you do especially with the abundance of sub genres now

jack tries so hard to come off cool and authentic but we can all see through it. he's trying too hard. mac was just cool and didn't have to put on. he was very authentic. even people who weren't his biggest fans saw that. jack wants that same respect but he's trying to to force everyone to fall for it.

id blame it on youth but i can't recall mac ever acting this cocky even in his early 20s/start of his career

Mac had his cocky moments but it's just the way he carried himself that made him such an endearing rapper even to people who didn't listen to his music like that.

The fact was that he grew and people witnessed his growth in his music. Jack still has enough time to grow, but I'm not sure if the game has enough patience to watch him do so

Not a fan of the music he reviews so not familiar beyond the major releases.

Seems to be a a bit cynical in the stuff I’m skimming

Al has great errant observations about hip hop. Like I'd recommend following him on twitter or reading his weekly p4k roundups before his reviews, which aren't bad but definitely don't have the same laser focus
