courtney love literally said black people shouldn't listen to rock music

    f*** that racist b****!

"Do you really like rock music?" she asked one female. "Because you're African-American. That would be like me being into Lil Wayne."

Think you're projecting. I never said the albums by women weren't worthy of praise, but there are a lot more records by women than on their previous list (see OP) and it feels like an overcorrection. As for specific instances....

    Live through this above nevermind

Exile in guyville ahead of any albums by pavement, nirvana, NMH or the flaming lips (who used to all be pitchfork royalty)

Hardcore by lil kim ahead of OB4CL, liquid swords, reasonable doubt and the infamous mobb deep

Seems like they are trying to sweep their history of misogyny under the rug

i'll ask the same thing i always do when that point of "time" is made. rhetorically of course. is this the same staff that made the 2003 edition of the list? i'd assume not. times have changed, drastically. we have more knowledge and access than ever before. we're also, yes, more tolerant and open-minded than ever before. not necessarily qualities i'd deem as negative. so, if that's reflected in a music publication's random and ultimately inconsequential list, then it's like idk...so be it?

trust me, you'll find several people who would see no issue with the examples you've highlighted. we should all become more comfortable with differences in opinions.

I get the urge to not have Nevermind super high but I would have put it in the top 5 because of how impactful it is. It is THE 90s album, and im someone who prefers In Utero. Same deal w Low End and Midnight Marauders

Velvet Rope was a great rnb pick for top 10, i would have had Illmatic in the top 10 as well

Also anyone who isn’t into Lil Wayne shouldn’t speak on anything ever

When the Pawn deserves better than marginal top 20. Phenomenal, highly influential album whose effects are still felt today

fair. which album out of the top 15 or 10 would you swap it with? let's leave out the Hole and Liz Phair albums lol.

I like Pinkerton but I don’t think it needs to be on any Best of the 90s list.

  • Sep 28, 2022

Also did I skip over Melon Collie and Parklife?

Missing those 2 and Pinkerton are huge misses

Pinkerton is 100% a top 150 album of the 90s

I could see it not being in a top 50 or even top 100 though

It’s not the staff that made it in 2003, and the current staff has no ties to them anymore. But that’s part of the issue many have. They used to have an identity and integrity behind the publication. Now it’s just one of many homogenized publications.

It’s all been downhill since the purchase.

right, and that's a completely separate issue that a few have brought up in this thread. but you'd have to be privy to that information. i don't think a good portion of people that entertain these lists are.

Re: the poptimism, I think most of their staff now is also just younger and less afraid of pop music than the Gen X rock fans who were there when the publication started. But I agree their embrace of pop music does take focus away from whatever smaller or up-and-coming bands they’re covering and has resulted in them becoming Rolling Stone for Millennials.
