only in rap do you have people still calling artists that came into the scene a full 10 years ago new school
these niggas are turning 30 and folks calling them new school like they still 20
s*** be like calling anthony davis new school player of the nba
Truthfully he shouldn't be treated as a new school leader cause the nigga been around since f***in 2013 lol possibly earlier if you wanna count his Sir Cartier era.
Sir Cartier> Playboi
Also I found out the other day this nigga gotta song with Sean Kingston?
Song pretty wavy though

To be fair his popularity really only hit recently so that's why I associate it with new Gen music
Im with most your posts but it's unfortunate this keeps working for carti because it's bleeding into other musicians and won't help rap in the long run or overall
I agree with this as well, the genre as a whole is uncreative, devolving and lowering the skill barrier, alot. I somewhat praise Carti, but he's still a product of the times. Rap just feels like the most immature genre right now, when it had so much to offer, depth and artistry wise, let's say 10 yrs ago.
We live in a time that aesthetics matter more than the music and he has the aesthetics on lock

being new not popularity related that's just being mainstream
new is like that one poster that's always posting random ass young soundcloud people

It sucks, I still like carti (just don't love wlr as much as some), but at this point he isn't doing anything to help the genre but almost seems like he's now actively hurting it, but because of the general lack of music

Right and I get what you're saying but he is treated like a new gen/new wave artist.
But you're right about those Melz rappers though, those are all "new". As in brand new.

It sucks cause he clearly has the skills to make good rap music that appeals to everyone. He just clearly targets the younger audience with aesthetic bait and style over actual music.

Agreed, but I still like most of his music as a millennial anyways lol
He's like the inverse of waka/Gucci/1017 in 2010-2014. Extreme influence, everyone wants to copy, and everyone is listening. But 1017 released 100s of tapes in that era, has opium overall even released 10? I want to blame streaming and the death of DatPiff which plays a huge role too, but we all lost as a result. Now next to no one is doing multiple tapes a month let alone 1 year and it seems like there's less creativity because it's more of a risk to deviate

Carti is definitely a product of our times. But at the same time, he isn't the worst offender of uninspired/uncreative music going on now. Its kinda sad, but that's pretty much what Hip Hop is now, the decline started in 2014 and now it's 2024.
The kids rapping today grew up on alot of the subpar s***.
I've just come to terms that Carti aint for me. I feel like I'm gettin trolled when I listen to him
Same

Id say the decline was really starting 2018-19. 2014-17 had immense amounts of originality and new sounds were being invented on like a monthly basis
If you mean purely just the rapping piece of hip hop music, sure, but we were still seeing big evolutions in sound on top of just a lot more music being put out. Rappers were less afraid to take risks until the death of DatPiff/SoundCloud so we were seeing actual experimentation on the music front. Now it feels like experimentation on the release or "aura" of a musician itself instead of music
It makes the whole "I am music thing" so ironic because carti isn't wrong. This is unfortunately what mainstream "music" is now, even if barely has anything to do with the actual music

This is one of his best songs wild ppl don’t know it
