because when a nearby country gets invaded the first thing you think about when trying to stop it is what ideology this falls under

Of course if I could press a button and have Russia not invade Ukraine I would have but they did. Larger entities invading smaller ones has happened all of human history and all Western support has done is extend Ukraines torture. The focus should have been on allowing Ukranians to exit safely. Imagine all the funding for the war had gone towards resettlement. But no, because the West did not support for Ukranians, they did for what Ukraine offers financially. Make no mistake, hundreds of people are making millions because more Ukranians are dying, not to mention conscripted Russians (their situation is not dissimilar to Americans in Vietnam)

The other issue facing Ukrainians in achieving reconstruction is that much of this aid from the West is made up of loans, not grants and so Ukraine’s debt will be sky high for a generations ahead. The loans are mostly long term e.g. for 25 years (before the war the average of long-term loans was 15 years). And Ukraine will not have to repay its debt before 2033, according to EU Council. This is an unprecedentedly long grace period. But even with preferential interest, servicing EU loans will be expensive. To solve this, Brussels came up with the mechanism of “interest subsidy”: the interest will be paid by EU countries instead of Ukraine. The “interest subsidy” was already applied to Ukrainian loans in 2022. However, in 2023, a new feature has been added to the conditions of the new EU €18 billion loan: The subsidy is activated only if there is “compliance with political prerequisites.” So if Ukraine steps out of line eg proposing labour rights, increased social spending or refusing to privatise state assets, it would lose the right to these interest-free loans. According to the memorandum, in that case, the EU should stop the “interest subsidy.”

that's just going to make ukraine a standard european country with a market capitalist economy. sure it's not ideal to you but how is this much different to poland, lithuania, estonia etc.? better than f***ing missiles anyway

there is an element of saviourism yes. i own up. however it's also about shared interests. i have an interest in russia being stopped.
and we've taken plenty of ukrainians
people can make money off our choices in ukraine but that doesnt make the choices bad, it just means they benefit some people. no impact on the moral calculus of disincentivising land grabs
i reiterate. failure to stop them in ukraine means eventually it’s going to be the baltics and the carpathians in trouble
as for the conscripts, i feel for them. it’s a russian government probpem not a russian people problem. not wagner though, they are rapists who i must reluctantly recognise as humans just like us
