How many people die due to car accidents yearly?

Who sets the gas prices, and what motivation do they have vs a city?

  • I’m a relatively new car owner and as time has passed i see it as a liability more than anything. S***s def not a flex lol

I don’t have anything against public transportation. personally as an introvert I couldn’t fathom doing my hour commute via public transportation every day (not to mention it would likely be even longer than that since there would be stops) but more power to everyone that does like it, that’s awesome for the environment.

I am fascinated by how much this site and ktt1 loves public transport though.

You wouldn’t have to commute for an hour if society was constructed around foot traffic and not cars my guy. Removing car dependence means removing that sprawl which means removing the time it takes to traverse it

To add to your second point, public transportation is overwhelmingly popular amongst urban planners and people who live in or regularly centers where foot and public traffic is predominant

I get so exhausted thinking about this s*** because why did we develop so goddamn poorly? I guess it's easy to Monday morning quarterback these decisions but, it's like every major choice either had something to do with capitalism, racism or classism or a mix of the three. Literally no one wants to be in the this situation but we're here and it just keeps getting worse.

At the risk of sounding like an overly woke 16 year old, they keep us so distracted with bullshit like taco bell getting chicken wings and Kim kardashian being the face of Balenciaga. How much more of this s*** are we gonna go through?

Sitting in traffic is sitting in traffic

true, idk where you live but i dont live in a huge city and traffic is never a huge deal for me, i just be bumping music and doing my thing

  • Public transport sucks
Too much people, too much noises, too much panic/hurry/hectic scenes, too much smells of all sorts, too much luggage and ambient s***e noises, dirty ass seats etc

Too much worrying bout whether or not i bought my ticket for a billion times
Whether or not am sitting at the right stop/platform or eve taking the right train/bus
F***ing loud ass speakers and bright lights from everywhere killing me too smh

    I have to calculate literally when i get there;
Too early, i get too antsy and sitting still is literally my worst enemy
Too late, and ill be caught up in a flight mode thats gonna leave me restless and exhausted for tje rest of the day

Dont even get me started bout the atmosphere in the vehicles

Its a whole bunch of nope for me
Even tho its easier/time saving sometimes

The internal battle and hassle is just tooooo much
Theres a stress factor every corner in every shape and form....

Comfort isn’t a good enough reason for every human to need to depend on a system as damaging and alienating as what we have now

I live in a whole different county than my work and from my wife’s work though. And we both work in unique non-business oriented jobs that we both love.

I feel like in a utopian society where everyone has a similar business oriented job and therefore can work in a metropolitan city setting and live in that same setting this makes sense, but that’s not how the real world is

Sometimes I wanna work in urban design to bring these issues to the forefront of America but at the end of the day, being a politician is the only way you can gain the power needed to put the right heads at the top

Not only that, you have get all the white people on board to the idea that where they live will be accessible to minorities. that's why a lot of the highways were designed to run through black neighborhoods as informal dividing lines

Depends on where you live/work honestly

Yea driving in DC is stupid: metro is convenient

    Cap of the year
Car commuting requires you to be incredibly aware of a lot of things for a long period of time
With public transport you just gotta watch your back and know where your stop is

  • Feb 4, 2022

thanks for starting this conversation @op

  • Feb 4, 2022

Also cities that have went out of their way to improve public transport and small-size vehicle commuting also have improved conditions and safety for drivers drastically

The utopian part is assuming that you can fit all members of society and all forms of work into a metropolitan box.

But yes I totally agree with you that the cities in the US should and could be improved a lot for people who do fit into that lifestyle.

Nobody wants to do that. We simply want to eliminate the suburban model in its current form because it’s a terribly inefficient and damaging organization of infrastructure.

Rural towns should exist, non-urban towns should exist, and cities should exist in all shapes and sizes.

It’s about how we currently build a bunch of housing to further the value of real estate companies by plopping a bunch of cheaply built copycats in a massive field that’s like 10 miles from any sort of public or commercial infrastructure, and then forcing you to depend on a car to get there. And then, by effect, forcing you to take a car to your job which is even further away because you live in an empty field 30-40 miles from the nearest major business area
