Been hearing this s*** ain't it...
It's intense and lovey dovey at the right time. Kinda solid. Ending was slightly corny imo

great first two acts, third act is cliche riddled. shame
This movie was bussin
It’s one of my favorite movies of the year even if it’s not perfect. The dialogue is actually strong and believable for the most part and it’s engaging as far as the love story goes. Lena made it more of a love story than a race story, which is smart because it would inherently be a race story. They really feel natural instead of forcing the superhero/martyr roles.
Switching personalities over the course of the movie was a great touch. The funny moments were really funny. I like the subtlety in showing what part of the country they were and I love the honesty of people being people at the end of the day. We know how the police and justice system systemically oppresses our people. The human touch is to show when certain characters have stances, decisions and judgements that are sometimes dictated by their age, morality and experience as much as it is by their race.
The talking without moving your mouth scenes were fire to me because it felt like Melina finding her own style. I know no idea is original and film buffs can probably hit me with examples of it being done before and possibly better but I really enjoyed that.
Also, from some of Melinas TV and video work in the past I was kind of expected this film to be a bit more stylized and beautiful front to back, but there are moments visually where it feels like a regular movie. Not a slight, but in the future work id like to see her push it even more beauty wise. There are a lot of great camera movements and great use of color.
I liked the use of music to highlight their location at times too. The bounce song in NO, the Wintertime song in Florida. I wish somebody like Kodak was less problematic cause that would have been perfect to use him lmao
This film really drives home that feeling of hopelessness. Especially within black people. Beyond just the initial situation that kicks off the story, but how they have to defend their own right to live to other people. Lena did a great job of articulating how frustrating it is when people try to argue you down as a black person when you’re not talking about politics or some debatable topic, it’s literally the life and wellbeing of you and your people. People try to hit you with whataboutism or put themselves in your shoes without any actual context or empathy or are willfully ignorant to stuff that we really have to face daily.
plenty of other black actors & actresses who are either equally or far more talented than the actor who had to go to a Chicago hood to understand what his character Slim's "education level" was.
I’m not invested in this debate but I genuinely want to know who your list is.
One of my favorite black actors working right now is the homie playing Franklin on Snowfall.

Yeah, that's exactly why I didn't want to continue that back n forth on such a public forum y'know. Something we should handle private or in our own communities rather on the internet for all to see, you catch my drift lol

Solid ass list.
I do worry that Janelle might be doing one too many movies that involve slavery in some way, but I still respect it.

yeah she’s just been taking Oscar bait roles so far. Same with Chadwick Boseman, if he’s not starring in Oscar bait he’s starring in a generic action thriller. Both need to switch it up.
