Lyrically I was never impressed by R.Kelly. They always read as very simple and not really complex. Innuendos weren't all that creative either. Now maybe this is a result of him being illiterate for much of his life like he's said, but yeah, when it came to Kelz he was never saying/singing anything earth-shattering.
All that being said, simple lyrics isn't always a bad thing if all you're trying to do is connect with the listener. Also I'm sure he made it easy to understand for the teenagers he wanted to get at

That's what makes great pop / R&B music.
That's literally the point. Being able to nail what's right under your nose time and time again is part of (redacted)'s genius.
It's much harder than one thinks to nail the 'simple' melody and lyrics.
