what does a producer do for a band?

so basically the producer is sorta guides and helps members translate their sound

not too familar with George Martin but nigel does lots of mastering to give each radiohead record like signature sound and because they worked with him for every album since OKC 1997 they basically know how they act and have perfected their productivity

i believe Nigel also got them to make in rainbows when they felt lost again

basically point trying to make is when you work with one person enough you became proficient with this producer instead of random producer chucking mc to rap over

hip hop would really benefit from artists doing producer collabs just see how people receiving savage mode 2 because he benefits with working with producer that suits him

Clipse were so good due to fact that basically only worked with the Neptune's and when they did work with other producers it was bit mid tbh

what does a producer do for a band?

can be a number of things like:

    providing recording studio/deciding recording conditions

working with band to come up with overall sound for the record

    Mixing/mastering

    tweaking the band members’ performances/parts

yup, f*** it, let's take it back to the 80's. One rapper, one producer.

Imagine a T.I. x DJ Toomp collab album

i think this idea works with duo/band then solo artists unless its obvs match like 21 x metro

True but when an artist is working with one producer often the vision can get across better and collaboratively the vision is more focused. Rico Nasty with Anger Management and Zel with Unlocked come to mind

How many great rappers are willing to sit with just one producer for a whole album and how many great producers are willing to sit with one rapper for a whole album. It’s not so common for those alliegences to form

There’s some artist that can work with multiple producers because they have a vision for their album, ie Kendrick.

There’s some rappers that just work with the hottest producers atm and end up with a mess.

Of course there’s heaps of great/classic albums out there with more than 1 producer but as of late all the albums with 1 producer
    ends up being amazing.

Yep, agreed. If both the producer and rapper are talented in their own right and their styles compliment you should end up with at least a good album.

On the other hand if the artist knows the sound they want then you can just choose producers that make the sound you want. This way actually has more potential I think because you aren't relying on one producer to make 10-15 good beats for you, instead you can pick the best beats from a range of producers. But of course this relies on the artist being a high calibre

Lots of producers have more range than we think but rappers only pick similar beats from them

I get what OP tryna say but I think an artist can still make a cohesive album with various producers.
