    Currents : Psychedelic pop disco R&B synth-pop

I just wanna say I’m one of the whitest mfs on this site but I still know way more about rnb than 50% of posters in this thread

He is. It ain't the R&B that niggas who still listening to Usher, Ne-Yo, and The Dream are thinking of. But it is still clearly R&B music. Just because it has a more pop influence doesn't make it any less R&B. Usher, Ne-Yo, The Dream and many other R&B acts also incorporated more pop influence in their R&B music.

that’s not rnb music he wouldn’t call it rnb himself he’s a pop star idk why ppl look at that like a bad word . compare his music to the ppl doing more traditional rnb sounding stuff there’s a big difference frank ocean has more claim to being rnb than him and i wouldn’t challenge it with frank

Late nights is great for that mid 2010s rnb sound, although j Cole instead of chance on planes knocks it down a few points

SZA got a spark. Summer Walker is doing well, Jhene Aiko is doing alright But none of these artists today are getting the major exposure at the level that artists of the same lane were getting 20-30 years ago since hip hop completely took over. They're all popular, but they're just "there" if you know what i mean, except maybe SZA who i think is the only one that's made a true impact of recent.

Now i'm well aware here are a lot of good independent R&B artists, but the genre as a whole is more or less underground outside of a handful of names. It's either you now either infuse rap culture to fit in or get shifted to the neo-soul category.

The last great R&B in terms of impact was like Usher's Confessions in my opinion and that was back in 2004 nearly 20 years ago now.

dumb ass. EMOM was impactful af.

Also you didn't Drake who gave us classics like Fire & Desire and spawned copycats

The difference is Starboy is pop and not going along w the current rnb trends.

When acts like usher and Chris brown started making that edm pop rnb s*** that was simply the sound at the time

Can’t believe people are even trying to argue that

Two of the biggest on Trapsoul are talking-singing and rapping. Point is that Weeknd is much more soulful and R&B by roots than Tiller. Easily.
