The XX is an indie band that plays with a bunch of different sounds, Weeknd basically sings in a soulful way in almost every song. Just because he doesn't sing on contemporary slick R&B 2000s production doesn't make him not R&B.

Brent, 6lack and DVSN are all alternative r&b, but they don't go away from their roots, which is why they are still called r&b instead of anything else.

R&B has evolved, he’s apart of the reason it has.

Not only is an above average vocalist the man is one of the greatest performers of his era

The acts you all want to have that impact just don’t have it.. at best they have moments and some accolades, if anything they deserve the soft hate for not being captivating

Take .Paak for example lol... he has the Dr Dre backing on a major and he can’t cross over.... he’s definitely trying but his music doesn’t resonate with fans like Chris or even R&B Drizzy

To be fair Weeknd trilogy sound did kinda put rnb in a new direction offset from that s***ty usher OMG DJ got us falling in love era, BUT it still has a lot of influence to other genres. It’s almost like a bridge to PND which is a bridge to the new era with the szas and all that.

And frank just does whatever he wants, he just dropped a song prod by justice for gods sakes and another that sounds like drake in my feelings but in Spanish with pitched vocals
