yeh i was just going on a tangent thinking about ovo signees cause you were talking about dvsn
OVO threw up billboards and did a ton of promo it’s just they’re not meant to blow up
Party might, majid might, I think Daniel might be the best shot now, but none are huge
how is appreciating his wide array of influence a discredit to him...
I think that’s more in response to the people chalking his music out to be “MJ Karaoke music”
how is appreciating his wide array of influence a discredit to him...
It’s way more patronizing to try to cram his vast catalog into one box imo
abel isn’t r&b
trilogy snd kissland are dark wave
BBTM literally has production from one of the most successful pop producers. you can tell max martin is all over that record. it’s a f***ing pop record
name one r&b song on starboy
h&m music bro, the lead singles are more electronic than anything they’re LITERALLY PRODUCED BY DAFT F***ING PUNK
MDM is the closest to r&b but even then it still has more dark wave and electronic influence than anything else.
you don’t know what you’re talking about bro bryson tiller is infinitely more r&b than abel and that’s fine.
Thank you
Trilogy and mdm are the last in herently rnb music he’s made and those records are a million times more out there than anything sonder or dvsn makes so what exactly makes him RnB and not another artist like idk the XX
Bcus the xx at this point be making some soulful ass bassy songs, last record was filled with it
bro these niggas need to listen to a brandy, darnell jones, ginuwine record or something they lost fr fr
To be fair, any sound labeled as rnb can be rnb, like the genres changed so much
Even before I feel like they woulda called like Stevie wonder rnb. I’m surprised MJ isn’t known as rnb cause his music is way more that than pop
What more of a push do you need? If I'm not mistaken the artist you mentioned in the op have great commercial success. I remember reading an article that Chilombo was platinum a while back.
Times has changed man
Ok so frank dropped one “inherently” rnb type project a decade ago since then he’s only dabbled in it occasionally here and there....and that makes him different from kevin parker how exactly?
You’re being completely arbitrary
Abel dropped multiple alternative rnb projects almost a decade ago sure but his last what 3-4 records have been pop, electronic s*** right? Ive listened to both extensively and imma just tell yk there is virtually no difference in the style of music the xx and abel make. None. Both play with elements of indie house pop rnb and electronic but that doesn’t make EITHER RnB artists.
Brent faiyaz is an RnB artist, 6lack is an RnB artist, dvsn etc i can go on
Also james blake is virtually identical to frank too in the kind of style of music they make intrinsically and it aint RnB bro
Im all for you saying ok lets widen the definition of what Rnb means especially since it’s been the most influential genre in basically every other genre of music but none of the above artists I mentioned would call themselves “RnB” which is what the thread is talking about.
Because Kevin Parker started a f***ing psychedelic rock project while Frank is known as an R&B artist, it's not like Blonde doesn't have R&B songs. CO is traditional R&B first before anything else and here you are calling him not R&B. I saw your comments pages ago discrediting traditional R&B, idk why I'm even talking to you.
The XX is an indie band that plays with a bunch of different sounds, Weeknd basically sings in a soulful way in almost every song. Just because he doesn't sing on contemporary slick R&B 2000s production doesn't make him not R&B.
Brent, 6lack and DVSN are all alternative r&b, but they don't go away from their roots, which is why they are still called r&b instead of anything else.
What the hell are you talking about
you posted the RnB tag in currents like it was some got ya
Brent soon
Yeah no hate to cb, he a legend no doubt but his name and clout carries him more than the quality of his actual music at this point, with respects to a few stand out tracks here and there.
Chris brown is incapable of delivering a true R&b classic album outside of maybe his debut which was still more pop R&b than anything.
Miguel is best hope for that classic R&b artist feel.
No disrespect to your view but I feel like that’s soft hating
R&B has evolved, he’s apart of the reason it has.
Not only is an above average vocalist the man is one of the greatest performers of his era
The acts you all want to have that impact just don’t have it.. at best they have moments and some accolades, if anything they deserve the soft hate for not being captivating
Take .Paak for example lol... he has the Dr Dre backing on a major and he can’t cross over.... he’s definitely trying but his music doesn’t resonate with fans like Chris or even R&B Drizzy
house of balloons has so much going on that i can’t argue
but echoes of silence not being dark wave don’t make sense. in my opinion the only r&b song on that tape is D.D and maybeee same old song
everything else flirts with r&b via subject matter and vocal delivery. nothing about these beats sound remotely r&b IMO
how is appreciating his wide array of influence a discredit to him...
niggas act like what you sayin is an insult or sumn lol
This is real diversity
Modern R&B
S*** is crazy.. come on KTT2
Not r&b
This is real diversity
Modern R&B
S*** is crazy.. come on KTT2
ni...
To be fair Weeknd trilogy sound did kinda put rnb in a new direction offset from that s***ty usher OMG DJ got us falling in love era, BUT it still has a lot of influence to other genres. It’s almost like a bridge to PND which is a bridge to the new era with the szas and all that.
And frank just does whatever he wants, he just dropped a song prod by justice for gods sakes and another that sounds like drake in my feelings but in Spanish with pitched vocals
