If there was a chance I would call him alternative r&b because he's not r&b in the traditional 1990s/2000s sense.
Idk I just see a lot more influence going into a Weeknd project than a Jhené project. But both of us will agree they’re both dope so at the end of the day it’s no argument
I hear you bro but I’m not over simplifying anything
Living legends that consistently drop exceptional music are being soft hated on because they don’t sound like Dave Hollister in 2000
Twist & Turn is one of my favorite songs of last year i just hesitate to call it rnb

One Woman Man
SZA definitely could and should be like Ariana Grande big
She might get there with this album
Credits on there are gonna be crazy the first 4 songs we know about are collabs with the Neptune’s, Jacob collier, darkchild, and Tyler
So someone like Frank Ocean is R&B then. He certainly sings with soul. Gospel influence and general themes of religion are ever present in his music, and he frequently collaborates with gospel and soulful singers for his albums (when he does collaborate at least).
Yet there are people saying he isn't R&B.
The Weeknd definitely has soul and rhythm in his music. His lyrics/songwriting is often depressing af as well. Is that not what is heard in blues music? And he definitely has a very soulful delivery in most of his music.
Yet there are people saying he isn't R&B.
Just cause niggas decide to sing over some guitars or 80s synthwave don't mean they aren't or don't make R&B music. Cause if y'all say that then that means y'all saying Prince isn't R&B. And you not gonna sit there and tell me the man who made Diamonds & Pearls, Pheremone, If I Was Your Girlfriend, Space, It's Gonna Be Lonely, Do Me Baby, Purple Rain, I Would Die 4 U, The Ballad of Dorothy Parker isn't R&B. Especially when he went on to be a major influence the niggas y'all claim to be "traditional R&B" like a Maxwell, BJ the Chicago Kid, Miguel, Ginuwine, D'Angelo, or even Musiq Soulchild.
Every genre sings about depression and religion breh
There is a production, tempo, song writing structure etc to RnB too
And frank and abel don’t encapsulate that in a pure sense
everyone saying frank and weeknd ain’t realised one transitioned to art pop and the other transitioned to regular pop lmao. neither of them niggas make r&b and that genre is dying at the hands of these new niggas who aren’t at least good songwriters for every sza who might not be the strongest vocally but got a lot of personality and sharp songwriting we have a bunch of boring whisper vocalists who sing over the most sterile boring trap influenced beats about ig dms which is why r&b dead and don’t have many superstars like mary j sade usher the-dream etc
“ we have a bunch of boring whisper vocalists who sing over the most sterile boring trap influenced beats about ig dms which is why r&b dead and don’t have many superstars”
Basically the reason the genre is dead. Some of its good but average/mid 95% of the time and very boring. I can get more emotion out of just listening to melodic rappers

It’s more about the Sonics to me, a song like nights doesn’t exactly scream soul to me, neither does a song like unity. There’s just a lot more going into his music than 1 genre
Yeah, I spent 30 or so minutes arguing with people about a genre categorizing black ppl, but I still stand by my point I just dislike when people s*** out stupid arguments (not saying u) to discredit people when not keeping the same energy for people that mix genres (Bryson and Jhene)
yea nah i feel u
i think it’s just a testament to how much this music means to ppl yk,
these “genres” really a huge part of our culture so misunderstandings can feel personal
even if there’s no superstars, r&b impacting more and more people globally everyday. it’s never been this creative and this popular simultaneously.

The wild thing about arguments like this is it’s more about how we decide to categorize things in our head, when really we’re all saying the same s*** just in the way we’ve defined stuff
Like one time my friend said money is fake cause it doesn’t have any real value, and I said it’s real cause we’ve given it value. But really it’s the same statement
Who was the last person to really bring soul into dis s***
Dreamville’s Queen Ari Lennox

yea bro it’s crazy just need to take a step back and realize it’s all cool
also i got high and cared a whole lot less about the whole thing
Who was the last person to really bring soul into dis s***
A lot of niggas
everyone saying frank and weeknd ain’t realised one transitioned to art pop and the other transitioned to regular pop lmao. neither of them niggas make r&b and that genre is dying at the hands of these new niggas who aren’t at least good songwriters for every sza who might not be the strongest vocally but got a lot of personality and sharp songwriting we have a bunch of boring whisper vocalists who sing over the most sterile boring trap influenced beats about ig dms which is why r&b dead and don’t have many superstars like mary j sade usher the-dream etc
EXACTLY
The biggest male face of rnb atm is brent before that daniel caesar before that khalid before that bryson
And none of these niggas can write for s*** just straight boring
i'm scrolling thru the thread and seeing "summer walker classic" and "jeremih legend" posts.
maybe OP is right. out.
yea bro it’s crazy just need to take a step back and realize it’s all cool

the 3 cups of coffee started wearing off for me so I pretty much lost interest too except from we all like good music that released from the years 1970-2021

not everyone who does it is bad but it’s so oversaturated these weak vocalists who don’t diversify their sound whatsoever. at least sza on ctrl don’t just sing over the same production and now she working with neptunes and darkchild. none of them doing that
Another name we’re not bringing up who I do think u can classify as rnb is sampha and he’s actually still really good but he doesnt drop

Daniel is a good songwriter though. Khalid was never rnb
