  • If I'm a artist and a label exec hands me a contract during a meeting, I'm stopping everything to read the whole thing, front to back.

If anything, just to see what the reaction would be.

Like imagine they slide the contract towards you, and then they got their hand out like this waiting for you to take the pen and sign it

But you're like this going "nah not until I've finished reading this whole thing"

Whats us talking about it going to change. Artists who sign these deals are desperately in need of money. Thats why they sign and we cant stop them. Its either this deal or being broke

Can't be cosigning her getting 16% on every dollar she makes. That's a robbery.

No lie. But also her advance was 111k so she coulda recouped quickly and they gotta make money off of putting her on. Think the deal should have expired after 2-3 albums or a couple years. But she in a position to renegotiate with a deal that wild

I mean talking about it on a national level too. I'd like to see people with a platform address it more, like how Kanye has been doing the last couple years.

Is it better to not bring light to the problem and not try to push for change?
These rich execs know these artists are desperate af and they exploit that and leave these artists out to dry after they are done with them. But the problem is the artists have no way to get out of the contracts, and its f***ed up.
So much wasted potential throughout music history because a record label won't let an artist release any more music so they just sit on the shelf and fade in to obscurity

Shouldn’t have signed it she prolly saw that advance and just signed.

That’s still life changing money, but not much in grand scheme of music

honestly lol. an $85,000 advance is not really life changing money. that's also questionably before tax. that's working like 2 years as a teacher or something

I suppose the opportunity is potentially life-changing, that's true, and in this case it was, but if you really think about it according to this she got an $85,000 (assumedly pre-tax) lump sum 4 years ago and then has earned only 16% of her royalties (and only AFTER making back the $85k) and has also given up a chunk of seemingly everything else she has made money on

also for an artist who has been well-documented in having issues touring (maybe this has changed for her idk but I remember her saying she never wanted to tour again) this is a pretty unfortunate financial spot to be in. would never knock the opportunity but think about how much money the label is making off her rn vs what she makes

  • Nov 3, 2021

Man, this industry will die sooner and later the more people wake up and learn that these labels do not want you to have any money or power, which is sad.

First of all, Niggas need to read their contracts if they're going to sign to a label.

Second of all, BE F***IN INDEPENDENT!!!!!

You can still make a name for yourself, just have a team with you ready, so you can make your career happen.

85k might not be alot for you but if I tell any nigga ik right now that they’ll get 85k for singing? s*** I might turn into Diddy

some lawyers are lowkey working in the label's favour so its not as easy as finding a lawyer

Some, not all. Im sure its easier said than done but you gotta look past just blowing up. You gotta think about surviving long term

  • Nov 3, 2021

it’s not easy to just hire a lawyer cos there’s different types and also the ones that specialise in these contracts tend to work for the label and not an artist

  • Nov 3, 2021

    sad
