when boredom strikes

another banger from Sam Esmail
Great interview with him regarding the film:

In a way it's sad that streaming services like Netflix has simultaneously allowed for films/TV shows to be made that maybe wouldn't have been made (not that this is an example, but I've read they give more creative freedom than traditional studios) AND kinda cheapens the value of the media just because it's so accessible - if that makes sense?
Kind of like with music. I'm sure back in the day before streaming there was more thought put into choosing an album, purchasing it and then listening to it and "savoring" it more. Now an album comes out, it's streamed once, opinion is instantly given, and then maybe never revisited again.
I say all this because the film starts trending, people rush to watch it just to have an opinion and not feel left out and then dismiss it over trivial matters like not liking the ending or feeling like it doesn't pay off or getting stuck on the "don't trust white people" line. Even Letterboxd reviews are just filled with dumb jokes or how the whole thing is an ad for physical media.
As for the film itself, it was beautifully shot as expected and it really plays into the suspense and tension set up. Incredible performances from the whole cast; really do a great job of playing unlikeable people. Some of the dialogue was a little too on the nose for my liking but judging from the reception it has had maybe it was necessary hand-holding, lol.
It feels like a puzzle, similar to something M. Night might write, except it doesn't give you all the answers. Mainly because the focus is on the characters, not so much what's happening - much like The Leftovers.
As for the ending, which a lot of people hated I thought it was equally hilarious as it was a great way to end it. On one hand, it's clear through the movie that the girl doesn't have friends nor receives the needed attention from her family and Friends is all she has. Realistically they're all probably going to die, but at least she got her happy ending, you know?
was super disappointed in this and im a huge fan of mr robot. but the ending was funny lmao. movie did not need to be almost 2.5 hours
@ilgnd Ok I thought the comment I read was saying Esmail was trying to make a statement about how binging a series isn’t the right way to watch but I think I misread it. How you guys explained it actually makes sense and I can see he most likely was going for that kind of commentary.
Especially with the daughter’s comments of never being heard by her family she felt like her only friends were the characters in Friends
It's funny that this movie is on netflix too lol
Similar feelings. He just said more eloquently than I would. I didn’t love the ending, but didn’t hate it either. Just felt a lil undercooked.
Something I like and hope becomes a trend, call me woke idc but Top Gun: Maverick did it too, where the antagonizing hostile country was never named, left very ambiguous to the viewer but not in a way that all affects the narrative. Similar here the “we’ve made a lot of enemies” line is less ambiguous but doesn’t pin you down anywhere. America is a country of immigrants, so when movies always use a particular country vs America it kinda always makes me feel a type of way being the son of immigrants. You’re effectively villainizing a section of American citizens who might have immigrated from that said country.
Like Tears of the Sun is really the first movie I can remember my brother buying for our dvd player when I was a kid for some reason. When I got older and actually became aware that Bruce Willis is killing Nigerians s*** made me feel a way
This was wack and I wanted to punch Julia Roberts character in the face, the older brother too.
This is getting tons of buzz on like Facebook viral share / Twitter and tik tok but everyone here is telling me it’s mid

I got a lotta of the “omg the Obamas funded this” “they’re telling us to get ready” on my timeline
The juxtaposition between the king deer confrontation and Mexican standoff was outstanding
This is the Event 201 all over again
i really like films like this but it was jjust boring and suffered from characters not talking to each other like humans
tesla scene was heat and felt like classic esmail
the ending was utterly awful i assumed there was still another 20 minutes left but nope
just a waste of talent all round really
