i liked scorpion on release but felt weighed down by a decent amount of songs
i love the deep cuts now they’re really good and some of the singles are timeless
views and tlop are similar bc it feels like both artists kinda stopped going for highly curated pieces of work and for more of the playlist, something for everybody type of albums
both records gave them some of their biggest songs and furthered their longevity but it came at the cost of their own ego and labels expecting consistent blockbuster albums that never really could live up to the hype.
donda and clb felt like they were trying to aim for that but fell short bc they just felt out of touch to what ppl were going thru with the world on top of the fact that they just weren’t really as good as their previous efforts despite some amazing songs. donda will be remembered more favorably than clb for sure just thinking singles alone, he kinda needed to bounce back with HNVM and HL or that era would have been. shaky
As big of a soft spot as i have for Scorpion i gotta say Views was way more impactful you couldn't go anywhere without hearing someone bumping that album it was all i was listening to that whole year s*** was a special time
There’s a reason people talk about summer 2016 so much and not much about 2018. Views was definitely part of that reason.
Take Care a certified classic but Views is gonna be those ones that kids grow up hearing in the house type classic. I don’t see Scorpion in the same vein even tho it is a huge album.
Exactly. I will be playing Views in my house

A lot of ppl who I haven't even heard talking about rap before talked to me about Views
Views got so much undeserved hate. They were just talking about it on Rory and Mal pod and all of em said Views is his best album

I was irl loling at those takes when the whole world saw how JBP reacted to VIEWS orginally. Honestly, most social media (not a real gauge of opinion) was so down on VIEWS the week it dropped. The whole "trash on first, classic 3 years later" cycle of opinions on music further emphasizes that you cannot properly assess works of art until at least a few weeks after release.
"Come with a classic, they come around years later and say it's a sleeper"

its wild how we never really got any music videos for views either, only one i can recall is the one dance one but that dropped on apple music only or some s***
and hotlinebling pre-dated views

He dropped a disaster of an Apple exclusive short film instead lol. Still a tragedy we didn't get a One Dance or Controlla or even Too Good MV.
Learned his lesson for Scorpion though.

One of his most factual lines

Fire take
Views is the better album, and that era had so many hits that lived even past 2016. Hotline Bling, Controlla, One Dance, Work, Too Good, For Free. After the Meek Mill beef, it felt like a year long victory lap. The album was everywhere. I'm certain it kept the lights on at Apple Music in those early days of DSP's and them fighting for exclusives. Scorpion definitely had it's moments, but it was stifled by the Pusha T thing. And the early reception was even worse than what it was for Views.
Views was a bigger album and more iconic era
But 2018 Drake is peak Drake. Views has a lot to do with that, but everything the Boy dropped that year was straight box office
I don’t necessarily think Gods Plan was bigger than Hotline Bling, Controlla or One Dance
In my feelings definitely isnt bigger than those

the hate kinda made sense tho at the time. people were expecting a complete rap album from drake after 2015 (iyritl, wattba, meek beef) and alot of bars on views are pre bad lol
as someone who was outside when views dropped it’s kinda crazy how the public did a complete 180 on that album.

I’ve always said this:
Views is not a good rap album whatsoever
But as a pop/R&B album, it’s not bad
I think he should’ve went full pop on that album and not had any rapping on it whatsoever, follow-up with the world stuff on More Life in 2017, and then return back to rap in 2018 with Scorpion

its a pop classic if you remove songs like Pop style, grammys
