As a Martin Scorsese Stan I can confirm this gotta be a top 5 film. Someone in the thread said it perfectly, in most of his films he Satirizes gangster life differently but in this film it’s almost from a very objective take rather than subjective.

You do this. It sucks. You do this, you will die with a heavy heart. In most of his films it’s never really played out that way.

had a question was wondering if anyone had the answer. In the scene when frank is about to get on the plane does anyone know why Russ asked for his sunglasses? Was it symbolic in some way? Not sure if I’m just over a***yzing it but it seemed purposeful yet strange

The choosing the gun for a hit scene was so fire

I think it symbolized entering a more vulnerable state- he can't hide his eyes behind the glasses, even though this is the type of situation where he wants to be detached from it all.

I waited for my second rewatch to give thoughts on it

The CGI is impeccable, you notice on the first scene because of the skin tone and lightening and maybe in the WWII scene but the rest flows so flawlessly you’ll get confuse as to what is and what isn’t.

The runtime and the story and how it unfolds never feels like a slow burn, to me a slow burn would be more of OUATIH where scenes sets moods, or maybe a Refn movie and its atmospheres or symbolisms

Here it gives you context and sets one scene to another for a great pay off so it’s all worthwhile like it never comes off boring or skippable even tho seeing this will eat your afternoon or whole night lol

But it’s worth it regardless as it feels as a king going back to a genre he birthed and mastered like no other and closes it himself with the greatest talents once and for all, the tombstone movie with a touch of grace that marks the end of something we’ll never get again, it was grandiose, bittersweet?

The highlight is by far when Russ tells Frank what’s gonna happen with Jimmy, the moment you see DeNiros reaction to it, it was breath taking, I couldn’t make any noise through it out even tho the following car scene was hilarious yet such tension, but all the way from that to Jimmys last scene i was on the edge of my sit taking it every second of it, intense

Al Pacino was so wholesome it made it heartbreaking

Shout out for the consistent writing on a such journey, the callbacks to the graves and the final shot with the door were telling and the heart of the movie

Also was legit happy to hear You Belong To Me in it, one of my fav doowop song, Bob Dylan covered it for Natural Born Killers too

Just checked my list and I have watched over a dozen 3 hours movies and this trash is easily the worst one of them.

Also, it's the only 3 hour movie that I have watched in installments which makes sense considering how much of a snoozefest it is.

That list is trash I'll give you that, should update it soon.

This felt far more natural, effortlessly in the best way than his other recent movies, and I don’t mean that in a bad way regarding his recent output I’m just saying I’d rank this pretty high

• The CGI at the start ends up not working for me cause Deniro still has an old ass body.

-Scorsese may have cast the worst Robert Kennedy I have EVER seen.

I subscribe to the idea that this is a film that is about a recollection from an old man so I think that is why many of the scenes where he is younger feel like he moves like an old man because of the perspective of an old man filling in the gaps of his lack of memory of those times. It also is why a lot of those scenes in his youth are often so short.

Yeah this killed me takes absolutely nothing away from the movie but was goddamn hilarious

We will definitely never get any other movie like that, we should appreciate every bit we get from it
