I'd love to see someone debate wayne's discography being greater than jay's @MrIndigo96
@02Shaq yeah dawg you might have to bow out of this one. Wayne peak was higher and had a better run but looking at discographies Wayne has more misses than hits compared to Jay.
like studio album wise Wayne cant battle Jay. mixtapes is a different story Jay has
The black Album
Blueprint
reasonable doubt

The problem is art and sports parallels don’t really work imo. So much of Jay and Drake’s accomplishments boil down to capitalist achievement, they are two of a kind but I don’t weigh that stuff as highly as some others seem to. I’d rather talk discography and Drake has one of the worst album discographies of any goat contender. His discography is like two steps above Snoop Dogg
it's the same thing as in sports
you gotta win rings at the end of the day
that's just the way it is
and with that in mind,
Drake and Jay are clearly calculated winners
regardless of how others view their music
they move as if they are GOATs
and their achievements back it up
Bron isn't in the goat talk if he
doesn't move how he moved from day one
of course it's not a direct parallel
but the mentality behind their successes is similar
and that's primarily what i'm focusing on
It does become a subjective argument tho because the question is would you rather have a moment as high as Wayne 05-09 or BIG 94-97 or spread that out through 20 years like jay? That part is debatable, jay was barely ever even the top rapper, is being consistently #2 forever really better than being #1 for a couple years? I get why people tend to give jay the credit for the longevity but I don’t personally feel like that should be the end all be all
Drake run actually already surpassed Hov’s a long time ago as far as actually running s***
I'm personally going with longevity over a higher peak. Don't get me wrong, nothing's wrong with the latter, but I can pull out 5 Jay classics and make an argument for each one, and I can't do that with Wayne, but if we're talking mixtapes, that's a whole different story.

We gotta count Wayne’s mixtapes imo, really anyone after the Wayne era mixtapes should count, he changed the game and they were a crucial part of his run, ignoring them in a discography convo is leaving out too much of the story

the amount of misses doesn’t really matter to me. Jay has a ton of misses too. His ratio of mid projects to classics is about equal to Wayne’s.
Wayne has classic albums and a few classic mixtapes to go with it.
that's a really hard question. I want to say it's a tie but i'm edging towards Section.80

what song(s) push section.80 over the edge for you?

Sport’s parallels are fun to do but it’s cringe when people take them seriously as 1:1 truths
Don’t know how Drake vs Kendrick turned into Wayne vs Jay but Wayne is the greatest rapper of all time.

Jay only has 3 misses, and i'm really stretching that out simply because Blueprint 3 didn't age as well as it should have. And even his misses are still good albums, it's just that he set the bar so damn high for himself.
i can't name one bad jay album tbh
Then ur a blind stan or you don’t actually know his catalogue and how a lot of his s*** was received by the public

Yeah op is forcing it with that for sure lol all this talk about “rings” and “calculated winners”

I think most people think Kingdom Come was a miss (but look at how beautifully it has aged), Blueprint 3 (the first true chink in his armor, imo) and MCHG because it was really jay on autopilot and lowkey being carried by production

these are definitely the ones people point to
but i'd take these 3 over the "worst" of my other rappers
lol

aint going to hold you mixtape Wayne is unstoppable.
now if we want to compare classic studio albums
you got
Carter 2
Carter 3
Like father like son ( )
vs.
Black Album
Blueprint
Reasonable Doubt

American Gangster
WTT

I'd take these three over anything Wayne has done, with the exception of Carter 2
look at the way kendrick approached GKMC
and all his albums
it's clear he's aiming for classics
why?
he needs rings, fam
this s*** is basketball
