    Experiments are better. Cause it'll get to the point where people get tired of ur sound and move on from you

    Doesnt even need to be some crazy experimentation, like yeezus or sum of that nature. Just trying different sounds, styles and flows would sufficed

    Oh of course. Im more speaking from a consumption standpoint as a listener and not a maker. Like do you appreciate music that is 100% what it is or music that is wildly different than previous albums

    different, is the music is mostly the same all the time I’m more to only listen to the top 2 or 3 projects of that persons discog instead of digesting everything because it’s not that different from each other
    for example
    like with keef, i only need finally rich, bang 2 and bftd from him because all his other music is the same and there’s so much of the same
    but with kanye, you need his entirety of his discography to truly appreciate and understand him

    Is the best experimental album better than the best “traditional” album

    It depends which one is better

    Experimentation =/= Quality

    Traditionalism =/= Quality

    Quality = Quality

    Its always good to be experimental

    Experimenting is always more interesting

    Imagine if Abel kept making sad boy indie music like everyone told him to? Artists need to grow

    you gotta master your sound first but once you do that it’s honestly fair game

    Kanye had to perfect the sound on CD with LR before he moved on and I think that’s a key a lot of artists miss

    In the wake of WLR Ive been thinking about this more and more. Opinions aside, a lot of people Id say are torn between hailing the album for Cartis exploration or grilling it for not being Die Lit 2.

    I also have seen artists like Nav get grilled for always rapping the same way and creating the same type of music. Is there really an issue with making the same kind of music as long as it bangs?

    So I ask: is it better to constantly change and evolve your sound, or to strike gold with a particular sound and hone it?

    i like both carti and nav.
    if the sound you have really is gold you won't catch flack for being the same, you'll get praised for being consistent. Nav has fans that love what he does.
    i think experimenting is good if it's what you wanna do but the fan response will only be positive if they like the new sound more than your old one.

    Amazing thread. Now I ask, for an upcoming artist should they have a traditional/trendy hip hop sound (Trap or even Boom Bap) or should they stick with their own weird sound?

    Your own sound sounds like an easy choice but there countless of rappers going unnoticed because they can’t fit it but then again in today’s time is it still possible to come up with J Cole type songs?

    Im eager to hear your thought process

    If one thing is for sure it’s that WLR was some serious trash

    To add to this, I’ve noticed some rappers only change their sound when they have loyal fans.

    Could Kanye pull of 808s and heartbreak sound as his debut? Better yet would it have had the same impact and recognition?

    if it ain't broke don't fix it

    until ur sound/formula starts gettin stale then branch out n try some different

    Just imagining how some of you probably talk to local rappers and producers

  • Jan 6, 2021

    Imo experimenting and risking failure is always better than sticking with the same sound over and over for years on end.

    Idk if thats even possible without forcing it tho. Like if its been like 5 years and u making the same s***, you forcing it. People grow and change and its natural for it to reflect in the music.
