even if the outcome is awful ill always respect the artist for taking risks

Amazing thread. Now I ask, for an upcoming artist should they have a traditional/trendy hip hop sound (Trap or even Boom Bap) or should they stick with their own weird sound?

Your own sound sounds like an easy choice but there countless of rappers going unnoticed because they can’t fit it but then again in today’s time is it still possible to come up with J Cole type songs?

Im eager to hear your thought process

Probably better to ride a wave and slowly introduce yourself while you hone your skills

Sometimes just leaving your comfort zone should be considered experimenting.

    Experimentation is great

    when it sounds good.

but that's purely subjective and oftentimes in music, s*** hasnt sounded good when it intiailly released, only for it to later become popular

I can respect trying to be experimental and failing more than making the same album 5 times in a row and everyone eating it up

    yeezus vs. mbdtf

Kanye really made a classic with Yeezus, but MBDTF isn’t “traditional”

taking an album out of the context of the time it was made in makes critical a***ysis useless.

    I didn’t understand.

I hate when kanye acts like mbdtf is just a collection of his old stuff like any of the tracks could be on his older albums lmao

I mean it really is but he ramped up the quality , content , persona and presentation by 1000 so it felt like he became a new artist when it dropped

The fact that there was a shift in content, doesn’t that automatically make MBDTF fresh? Let’s not talk about production.

  • Jan 7, 2021

u can stay true to your sound and still be experimental

I didn’t say it wasn’t fresh ! What’s fresher than someone feeling like a new artist on their 5th album ???

It had the same premise i guess but he was never as bold as runaway/power/aotl before
