Yes, big artists who aren't A-list like Curren$y still embrace the concept, but as a Drizzy fan, someone like him would benefit heavily off the concept

Even on CLB, there isn't a real consensus on people's favourite tracks because he's dispersed so many of his sonic styles throughout the album

And even on his Fry Yiy guest mix, he played his afro track with Rema and many people in the forum thought that should be on the album, not to mention cut-out tracks like Lie To Me and Lucky Lefty

...and the built up need for another rap album

Idk if he's scared to put out a "dud" but he's got fans from so many different communities of music, I say he embraces each and puts out the vaulted tracks together simply as a mixtape, and then he could put out an album like NWTS with a concise amount of tracks he simply loves, without adding some to simply appease his different styles at the cost of how the album flows / is constructed

    lmk your thoughts

    Absolutely

I didn't add to that section because it won't let you include it in the Music section anymore

Future might be the only one that sees the vision

But in all seriousness don’t most artists just release playlists, eps, or just drop singles until they decide to call their project an album?

I know. It's blurry these days.

I remember 50 Cent dropped AA as an album then he called it a mixtape when it flopped.

I think Drake did the same thing with More Life. He called it a playlist when it got overshadowed by DAMN.

I think it all depends on the purpose for the project. Mixtapes are usually used to build up hype for the album. The album is the final product while the mixtapes are musical promo essentially.

Streaming killed mixtapes. These artists are actually still making them. They just upload them to streaming and call them "albums".

I'd consider "voice of the heroes" to be a mixtape.

Drake does not need a mixtape in fact he needs to shut the f*** up and stop putting out music. The issue with him “dropping the same music” is because since Scorpion the man has gone on a tear dropping iconic features one after another & memorable songs that by the time his major album came out it’s - “that’s it?” when he’s been feeding us for the past 3 years.

If he was dropping mid for 3 years and dropped CLB, this site would be drooling.

    this makes perfect sense

your observation on albums being later retitled as playlists and mixtapes when they don't do as well is on point too. good poster

Not sure why people think they ever left. Most of the most popular projects of the past 5 years have been mixtapes lol.

All of the new generation artists were inspired by mixtapes.

Back from the dead - chief keef (a mixtape) is basically the formula for all of their albums.

  • mixtape became a stupid marketing term for not good enough to be called an album

    you're right,

idk if it's the labels trying to get as much streams as possible dubbing them albums, but it just hurts the artist in the long run if they don't think every track is A1

I feel like artists need to realize the promotion for their project impacts the reception quite heavily, they're essentially pitching an expectation

  • if its some 00s era beats w DJ drops could be cool just drop it on sc or w/e
