Also any samples used wouldn’t need to be paid for (permission is still needed in most cases). Streaming means the artist can get paid for the publishing the music

I wouldn’t be opposed to it but artists nowadays want to capitalize off of their art and make money any which way possible. so really mixtapes could only realistically come back for artists who don’t need the money for their work or for the artists that do not have a large enough following to garner the revenue they so seek.

the artist defines it, it usually refers to the amount of work/budget put into the project, i also think it has to do with label standards and contract jargon
