xcx 3/world was basket case when her label started forcing her to work with mainstream producers
charli did those tapes cause her label wasn't f***ing with the s*** she was doing so her label let he do the mixtapes with zero promotion or music videos
probably best thing for her career cause it made her have really cult fanbase
you're definitely right because even the way she talks about labels now, she's definitely doing things more recently musically to simply appease them
but an aside, i hear this might be her last album under contract ?
You understand the original publication of a mixtape meant it was free correct? Can be distributed and downloaded to any third party available. Also any samples used wouldn’t need to be paid for (permission is still needed in most cases). Streaming means the artist can get paid for the publishing the music

yes last album on Atlantic, she going for a full on sell out era with amount placements she is doing (she got top 5 single in the uk). I'm not too sure what she is gonna do after this
disregarding the concept of music execs ruining music
another example of an artist testing out sounds in a mixtape before an album, doing great for a specific fanbase of theirs, is Tinashe's "Nightride" compared to her album "Joyride"
Joyride is widely considered a dud while Nightride, a mixtape, is considered one of her best projects where she explores that "night time" r&b sound that funny enough, Drake helped originate

an interesting time for sure, the promo is very intriguing 😅

same can't wait for her do full on traditional pop record, switch it up a bit
i want weeknd to drop a tape so bad
abel should do a experimental tape as he wants to work with arca
imagine like 5 track ep with arca just doing her magic with weeknd
Wayne type mixtapes where there’s little to no original beats and you do your own thing on popular songs should make a comeback
i want weeknd to drop a tape so bad
remember that little five track ep after the serena break-up ?
now imagine him embracing that for an extended period with a whole tape to just have as part of his discography
that's why people love the kissland era years after even though it was an album, seems like he never embraced that style again

i think abel is bigger enough now to put out anything he wants without label stopping him tbh. Back then he was still upcomer
The label letting him work with OPN on such a commercial record is pretty nuts

there's definitely hope for Abel, who knows maybe he starts a trend in the coming year and a bit
he seems to be doing whatever he wants lately

And some oneohtrix on there
And some oneohtrix on there
yep facts
they were supposed to do tape for uncut gems but they decided to do songs on AH instead

Hard to because you cant put them on streaming.
And that makes them hard to access
DaBaby has been doing beat jacking freestyles on YouTube though. He's dropped like 4
I'm still waiting on that fully RNB tape/album, I feel like it'd be a shame if he never dropped one
I wouldn’t be opposed to it but artists nowadays want to capitalize off of their art and make money any which way possible. so really mixtapes could only realistically come back for artists who don’t need the money for their work or for the artists that do not have a large enough following to garner the revenue they so seek.
how do you define a mixtape these days anyway? i've seen albums been called mixtapes
the artist defines it, it usually refers to the amount of work/budget put into the project, i also think it has to do with label standards and contract jargon
I know. It's blurry these days.
I remember 50 Cent dropped AA as an album then he called it a mixtape when it flopped.
I think Drake did the same thing with More Life. He called it a playlist when it got overshadowed by DAMN.
I think it all depends on the purpose for the project. Mixtapes are usually used to build up hype for the album. The album is the final product while the mixtapes are musical promo essentially.
more life was always called a playlist but its basically just a mixtape. its like how dark lane demo tape is a leak compilation of sorts.
