exactly this. mfs are arguing in terms of who they like more and who’s still on top now but that s*** does NOT matter. it’s about cultural impact. time is a factor as well

Kendrick, Drake and Cole came in and dominated rap for the whole 2010s decade. Tyler just dominated the late 2010s, there’s a difference. Its also why I wouldn’t put Ye in this category either, his impact on the culture started years before all of them

odd future was pretty influential early 10s

This idea of a big 3 was only made because Kenny and Cole rap “traditionally” in contrast to Drake, Nicki and Fewtch.

it’s because they were literally the big 3

  • Jun 13, 2022

tyler is more influential then all of them besides drake that’s one thing i’ll say

tyler was the leader tho and did alot to get that group off the ground

  • Jun 13, 2022

The fact that some of y’all don’t understand why they’re called the big three to THIS DAY is wild

you are correct. but it was a group and they were perceived that way by the public

Don’t think I’m downplaying Tyler’s impact or anything though bc I love him more than Drake and Cole but this thread is about public cultural perception, not about whether or not Tyler was a better artist or more innovative.

Tyler/OF had a more niche impact than the others and the fact of the matter is that he wasn’t that highly thought of by most rap/hip-hop fans until the last few years of the decade. and at the time, he publicly claimed that he didn’t even want to be embraced that way. he catered to his alternative audience and stayed in his own lane. There’s just no need to put him in that category with the other 3 imo

    and certainly not tyler

Good thing freestyling isn’t a factor in determining the top 3

What did Cole do more than Nicki or even Fewtch to earn him being in the Big 3?

No the big three started with Wale, Cudi & Drake

They were the face of the young new faces after gangsta rap era deemed by xxl

it slowly morphed into Cole, Kendrick, Drake, Wale

which eventually became just the Big 3 as we know them

And the reason Nicki and Future weren’t there was because?

there are def some young mfs on this site who don’t know what they’re talking about lol but pointing out the “late career” run of an artist is completely valid when you consider how the music industry works. it’s not really built for artists to have long-lasting careers. the youth runs the market and dominates what’s popular. then they grow up and the next generation determines the new set of trends and artists that are popular

I feel like a lot of ppl on this site take this for granted but artists who have 10+ years at the top and still maintain their hype with the young crowd into their 30s and 40s are anomalies, not the norm.

Going by how long they’ve been in the game and the standards of how the industry works, everybody being mentioned in this thread - Drake, Kendrick, Cole, Tyler - should all be considered washed up by the GP but they aren’t. they are all still enjoying A+ status and they are all incredibly respected by the young kids who weren’t nearly as affected by their previous work as most of us here were. This is why all these men are legendary. 2x so in the case of Kanye who is 20 years into his career and still releasing top-selling albums

Idgaf how you feel about Kendrick, Drake, Cole, Tyler, etc. individually, we HAVE to give them all their due for maintaining their relevancy this long in such a fickle industry

And, just to clarify, I meant to say prime. That's the word I was really going for. Career was more of a spur of the moment word.

Tyler's prime as a critically acclaimed artist started years past his debut.

the idea of an artist in their late 20s-early 30s having a "late career" run is crazy

it seems like some people on this site expect artists to be totally finished creatively once they hit like 35

right like this isn't basketball lol

  • Jun 13, 2022

should Tyler be in the early 10s conversation as it pertains to 2022? if yes then we can get Cole out of it

  • Jun 13, 2022

Tyler is like the drake of 2013 nerd rap

    The top 3 is

    Kendrick
    Future
    Youngboy

Drake is washed and Cole is mid

Kendrick took 5 years off and dropped a album better than all the mid those two dropped in that time

Cole can def outrap YB if that's your question

  • Jun 13, 2022

Of course, he's got multiple fantastic projects under his belt as of now, yet he's still getting overlooked

I'd take Tyler over Cole any day rn
