I just feel like you get all the same legendary acting and technical mastery that you get in There Will Be Blood, but the movie gives you characters you can empathize with more. It has way more heart. That’s why it will surpass TWBB in time.

Yeah but TWBB has a way more straight forward story and I think that’s why more ppl f*** wit it over Master

You frame this as due to the expanded critics grouping, but l’avventura was ranked like top 10 for the second poll when it was a year old. That is a GREAT movie (imo) but I think other examples can be found too.

That’s just to say, I don’t think this is a matter of the new group preferring recent movies more than previous voters

holy s*** didnt realize lavventura dropped out

Y’all needa stop getting mad at the lack of famous movies 😭 it’s not like history is working its way towards a final ‘objective’ list of great films

I’m glad a relatively obscure pick like Daisies is getting it’s due

Or maybe people are saying the famous movies they did pick could have been better?

I feel like people calling totoro simple dont give it enough credit. The whole seed planting sequence and the atom bomb tree is so beautiful and poetic.

especially w the theme of children’s imaginations becoming real life hopes and fears, which can then be manifested into real life events. plus the context of Japan moving forward from wwii. Thinking about the music from that scene can get my bumps goosed on command

    Is Jeanne Dielman 23 good?

it's been on the list of films to watch for practically every film studies syllabus i've seen (mine too, but I got burned out from watching films because they ALL felt like homework)

i've been meaning to watch it for practically 3 years now, and it isn't the runtime that scares me really. some times it's just unexplainable. i just know that my jeanne dielman torrent seeding like crazy rn

Threads like these is when niggas pretentious side comes out. Stop acting above others just cause niggas wanted to see Tarantino or Coens on this list. Movies isn’t just about new French wave or watching a lady peel a potato for 10 minutes.

i personally like several Miyazaki’s more than Totoro, but I’m completely down with it being the movie that represents his overall career and ethos

many critics voted for coens probably. barton fink is one of those that gets votes but doesn't make the cut. one of my favorite coens too

Honestly doesn't matter what the credentials of the critics are. These lists and all others like them are a disease in film culture. They hinder wider discovery and appreciation, and their negative impact lasts for many decades.

Ngl lists like this were life changing for music but for cinema it was pure books. David Thompson doesn't know it but is my mentor.

    ranking the Top 10.
    1. Citizen Kane
    2. Mulholland Drive
    3. Vertigo
    4. 2001
    5. Tokyo Story
    6. Jeanne Dielman
    7. Man with a Movie Camera
    8. In The Mood for Love
    9. Singin' In The Rain (this one's way too high imo and wouldn't make my Top 500)

For some reason I have seen other Denis films but not Beau Travail. I guess it's about time.

Real for Singin In The Rain slander unbearable

no em-dash bombs, but you're technically right. the necessity for lists like these weaned off (even though I still enjoy them) around the time internet became a thing. forums, discord and letterboxd has done much more for me than a poll ever will in terms of personal growth in filmwatching.

the fact that films can be left off due to not having a good or no restoration (fact for certain films where you can trace its bump back up after a resto on the S&S poll), populism or recency bias sucks honestly.

the belgians first started this practice of making lists in the 50s and when you had nothing but a pen and a paper and your own memory to make up your own cinema canon if you were a film buff. perhaps it's moot, but it's tradition at this point. we also have a tendency to LOVE to categorize and rank stuff (looking at you @Elric )

list like these only become dangerous when you treat them like "watch this but nothing else". all it really is celebrate, categorize, assess films from throughout history in the year of 2022.

Yeah I like to rank each year but all time is impossible with only 100 spots

It definitely deserves votes. I just don’t get why people run with the whole “you goofy” or “watch more movies” just cus @Jonboi questioned why QT and Coens is missing?

You know, Totoro didn’t land for me when I initially watched it but I always thought it was because I wasn’t looking at it the right way. Personally, I’d swap one Miyazaki for something like Fantastic Planet, but all the same it’s nice to see another animation besides Spirited Away! It’s somewhat surprising from a ‘traditional cinema’ group like this, but reflects the expanded reach of Japanese animation

How is there not a single Disney classic? That’s insane.

Or even Pixar. Toy Story basically brought about the death of 2D animation in film.

Also Grave of the Fireflies 100% should be there as well.

The real reason Coens are missing is because they have too many good films. Unfortunate but true. Too much split the votes

It’s the same reason Edward Yang and Godard didn’t get anything too high of the list
